Hiking Mount. Kenya

Mount. Elgon

However, Wagagai, the highest peak of Mount Elgon at 4321 meters (14,177ft) is located in Uganda. The other peaks of Mount Elgon are Sudek (4,302 meters (14,114ft) located on the border of Kenya and Uganda, Koitobos (4,222 meters (13,852ft) in Kenya, Mubiyi at (4,211 meters (13,816ft) in Uganda and Masaba standing at (4,161 meters (13,652ft) in Uganda. The suitable peak for those hiking from Kenya is Koitobos. Mt. Elgon is ranked one of the intact calderas in the world, something that makes it an exception. Mount. Longonot

Standing at 2,776 meters above the sea level, Mount Longonot is Kenya’s stratovolcano located in the south eastern part of Lake Naivasha. The name Longonot is derived from Oloonong’ot, a Maasai word which means a place of many spurs. The mountain is part of the famous Mount. Longonot National park which shelter numerous birds and wild animals which include Giraffes, buffalos, Hartebeests and Thomson’s gazelle. Mount Longonot last erupted in the 1860s and it has never erupted again. The volcano is majorly covered by the forest around the crater. The stravolcano is located roughly 60 kilometers from Nairobi and can be reached by a tarmac road.

Mount. Satima

Also known as Mount. Lesatima, the volcano is the third highest volcano in Kenya standing at 4001 meters above the sea level. Mount. Satima is the highest peak in the Aberdare range surrounded by sharp volcanic rocks called dragons. The slopes of Mount Satima are covered by forests which shelter different wild animals and birds. Travelers hiking this iconic mountain therefore have high chances of meeting wildlife along the trek. The summit of the volcano offers you great views of Aberdare national park, the other volcanoes in the opposite direction and neighboring local communities.

Mount. Kinangop

Located south of Aberdare national park, Mount Kinangop is the second highest mountain in the Aberdare ranges after Mount Satima. The volcano is covered by bamboo forests on the slower slopes while the upper slopes of Mount Kinangop is covered by tussock grasses. The volcano stands at 3,906 meters above the sea level and its rocky peaks normally get frozen in the night due to very cold temperatures.
