Apoka Rest Camp is operated and administered by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Apoka Rest Camp includes sixteen self-contained cottages, each with attractive mattresses and mosquito nets. The rooms, on the other hand, are created and fashioned in an African style of architecture and have good fresh air despite the lack of an air conditioner. Staying here requires more forethought; you must prepare ahead of time what you will bring, such as food and drinks, in order to sustain your whole stay in the park. The Apoka Rest Camp features fourteen bandas, each with two beds, however the rooms are not self-contained.

Apoka Rest Camp features a vast and open property that is popular for camping. If you want to go camping, you can do so, but you must provide your own camping equipment because the lodge merely provides a camping site. The lodge does not have an operating restaurant; you will need to bring your own food to feed on. We recommend that you pack your food from Kampala or Mbale, Gulu, and other dependable metropolitan towns, which may offer cuisine of your interest. The camp has some refrigeration, and you may bring in frozen meat. Markets sell eggs, bread, and prepared soups, and you can make a stew with anything from vegetables to meat or chicken.

Other accommodation in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Savanna Lodge

The outskirts of one of Uganda’s most magnificent national parks lies this pristine lodge. Kidepo Savanna Lodge is the newest and most remote Nature Lodges property. This lodge pays honor to this natural jewel, which has garnered multiple international accolades as one of Africa’s best parks. The lodge is practically a stone’s throw from the park, being only 500 meters from the Kalokudo gate. It provides breathtaking views of the vast Narus Valley, Mount Morungole, and the distant mountain ranges that constitute the boundary with Southern Sudan. The savannah surroundings, meadows, rocky outcrops, and… the Karamojong, the tribe with their typical manyattas and colorful blankets, inspired the resort. Because the resort needed to fit in rather than stand out, they chose between the more opulent self-contained safari tents and the more comfortable lazy camping tents.

Apoka safari Lodge

Apoka safari Lodge is designed for comfort, despite its remote location. Spacious, private cottages cluster around a rocky kopje overlooking the Narus River, each with a screened balcony, outdoor stone tub (ideal for a starlit soak), and exquisitely handcrafted furnishings by local artisans. The wildlife is abundant – lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and zebras, to name a few – and can often be seen from the comfort and privacy of your suite, or from the cool waters of our natural rock pool.

Adere Safari Lodge

Adere Safari Lodge is a high-end safari lodge perched on the edge of Kidepo Valley National Park in a unique natural setting that allows visitors to enjoy the magic of seeing wildlife up-close while simply relaxing by the pool, giving you worthwhile and transformational safari memories of Africa. Adere Safari Lodge features custom-designed safari cottages with functional luxury touches, exclusive settings in Kidepo Park’s Wilderness to immerse you in a truly African authentic experience unlike any other.

Camping in Kidepo Valley National Park

Camping in Kidepo National Park is one of the most authentic ways to interact with wildlife. Aside from being a less expensive way to visit the park, your Uganda safari tour allows you to get up close and personal with the animals. Camping is done on the ridges of the Narus valley in Kidepo National Park.

This area in Kidepo is the main source of water during the dry season, and all wildlife congregates here to quench their thirst. Your Uganda wildlife safari includes an armed guide to protect you from wild animals. A fire is kept going all night to keep animals away from the site.

Hiking in Kidepo Valley National Park

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

East Africa Safaris

Hiking safaris

Travel Blog

Uganda Attractions

Uganda cultural tours

Uganda Safaris

Uganda Travel Packages

Hiking in Kidepo Valley National Park: Though the Karamoja region is mostly flat, Kidepo Valley National Park has a variety of sceneries and geographical characteristics. From stunning flat plains teeming with grasses to plateaus teeming with woods, arid riverbanks fringed with desert palm trees, and mountains teeming with montane forests, there is something for everyone. Kidepo Valley National Park is a Uganda safari destination that has it all. Each region has its own set of wildlife animals, birds, and other wildlife species that grab every traveler’s interest as they go about their daily activities. The stunning natural environs pique visitors’ interest but also raising doubts.

Many tourists find it difficult to resist the desire to venture into the wilderness, explore it, and uncover the beauty hidden away from the population. It should be noted that any climb requires a ranger escort. Many guests leave Apoka assured that the ranger has the necessary experience and drive to meet the visitors’ goals. The optimal time to begin the trekking safari is early in the morning, before the heat of the day rise. Lomej Mountains are the most popular hiking safari location since hikers meet magnificent sightings along the route and it just takes a few hours for even novice hikers. The peak of the Lomej Mountains provides breathtaking views over the Narus valley and surrounding places.

The Kidepo valley hiking safari allows you to discover the picturesque sand banks surrounded by gorgeous borassus palm groves. Winds whip the palm woods in all directions, creating a cracking sound as branches crash into one other, transporting trekkers to another realm. Many visitors find the Kidepo Valley sand banks to be an ideal location for a picnic lunch, sand sports, photography, and sundowners. Other adventurers travel the additional mile to the Kanangorok hot spring and discover a unique natural spa with interesting legends about its creation.

The 9-hour hiking safari to the Morungole Mountains is a challenge of physical fitness, endurance, and patience that is rewarded with an exhilarating balanced blend of scenic exploration, wilderness adventure, and cultural excursions. Hikers travel through montane forest, rugged terrain, and to higher altitudes with spectacular views of the Karamoja plains.

The journey culminates with a visit to the Ik tribe, a population that has kept close to traditional African traditions, viewing anything foreign with distrust and resisting interference with their way of life. Any hiking expedition into Kidepo Valley National Park must be accompanied by a ranger who is familiar with the wilderness environment, language, culture, and customs of the indigenous people.

To experience the splendor of the environment, begin the journey early in the morning when animal species are most active. Carry plenty of drinking water, snacks, a lunch box, a first aid kit, a walking stick, binoculars, cameras, maps, sunblock, bug repellent, and a guidebook. In the rainy season, safari pants tucked into thick socks, long sleeved light garments in drab colors, hiking shoes, safari hut or hat, sunglasses, and rain gear are acceptable. Hiking costs are $30 for non-foreign residents, $15 for foreign residents, and $10,000 for East Africans.

Other safari activities in Kidepo Valley National Park

Game drives are the most popular of the activities in Kidepo Valley National Park. Narus Valley is where most drives take place because many wild animals congregate here, especially in March. Tourists usually have a clear view because the savannah grassland at the park is low due to a lack of rain, and the lions and other big cats are mostly seen on the rocks of kopjes looking for food. The game drive is best in the morning because most wild animals are looking for food. Some game drives can be organized for afternoon and night. Occasionally, game drives are conducted along Kidepo Valley, where tourists can enjoy the sand bed river “oasis” in the desert. The valley has palm trees and a large number of birds, and is only visible during the dry season. Because Kidepo Valley National Park is a Ugandan desert with tsetse flies crossing the Sand bed River, this is best done in the morning before it gets too hot.

Nature Walks

Nature walks can be done at any time of day around Apoka Camp, and tourists can expect to see a variety of wildlife such as Elephants, Reedbuck, Zebra, and a few others that have not been mentioned. These are best in the morning because tourists can observe the animals closely as they hunt for food.

Bird Watching

When it comes to this activity, this is a fantastic view for birders. The park has a wide variety of birds, some of which are not found in other birding areas in Uganda. The park is ranked second in Uganda for its variety of bird species, and this activity is what drives the park’s popularity. Over 50 species of outstanding bird prey have been recorded in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Boat cruise in Lake Mburo National Park

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

Birding safaris

Cultural tours in Uganda

East Africa Safaris

Hiking safaris

Travel Blog

Uganda Attractions

Uganda cultural tours

Uganda Safaris

Uganda Travel Packages

Wildlife safaris

A boat cruise in Lake Mburo national park is one of the safari activities that allows you close interactions with wild game on your Uganda safari. Unlike conventional guided game drives, a boat cruise offers unique, relaxing, and surprisingly close interactions with the aquatic and land mammals by the banks of the river. Lake Mburo national park is Uganda’s smallest savanna park. Do let that deter you. This small ecosystem of lakes, grasslands, and woodland is a haven for some of Uganda’s best game. The reserve is famous for the vast herds of zebra and Impala. Topis, eland, Jackson’s hartebeests, buffalo, warthogs, giraffes, waterbuck, and leopards are some of the wildlife that calls this small park home. Although the park lacks some of the big game like lions, elephants, and rhinos, it makes up for it with the share volume of those that are present.

Boat cruise in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo national park offers boat cruises on Lake Mburo. This lake offers a lifeline to the wildlife during the rather brutal and harsh dry seasons of June-August and December-February. Long herds are seen heading to the Lake to quench their thirst. There are 2 scheduled boat cruises on the Lake. One at 11am and 2pm. These boat cruises last for 2 hours and are led by experienced rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. They mainly cruise close to the banks of the river for close encounters with the wildlife that is mainly found by the banks. Since hippos can’t swim, schools of hippos are some of the highlights on this cruise. Crocodiles and buffaloes are visible on the banks. Bird species like African Fish Eagle, Kingfisher, Papyrus Gonolek, and Egyptian geese can be spotted as they make an attempt at fishing.

Uganda Wildlife Authority is in charge of these boat cruises. There are 2 boats available for the cruise. A small 15-seater and a double-decker 45-seater are well maintained and piloted by expert staff. They are readily available to you in case you have any questions.

When to go for Boat cruise in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo national park is open to visitors all year round. However, some conditions offer better safari experiences. During the dry seasons, most of the watering holes in the park dry up and the wildlife becomes concentrated on the lake. This makes it the ideal time to embark on these cruises. More still, the afternoon heat coupled with the cool winds blowing across the lake offer a beautiful counterbalance. It is rather uncomfortable when it rains, making you weak and cold.

Other safari activities in Lake Mburo.

Game drives:

Game drives are the most convenient way on any African safari. These game drives are led by expert rangers who know the wildlife in the park and the best tracks to find them. These game drives are conducted in a customized safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, offering 360 degrees of the savanna plains. You will enjoy close interactions with the park’s residents in safety.

Nature Walks:

Nature walks in Lake Mburo are exceptional. Because the park doesn’t have a lot of predators, nature walks are simply stunning. You are led by an armed ranger who will take you closer to the docile game. The grazing zebras, giraffes, topi, and warthog are the highlights of your nature walk. However, the wind, blowing across the open grasslands, carrying with it the smell of fresh grass and game accompanied by the chirping of the birds is transcending.

Cycling:

Are you the adventurous one? Cycling on the tracks in Lake Mburo is both engaging but also gives one an opportunity to take in the views of nature. You are led by an armed ranger for protection. The breathtaking scenery in the beautiful landscape is captivating and enchanting. The wilderness’ beauty extends beyond the valleys ahead and appears to touch the sky. The tour participants are inspired to explore the wilderness, wander through the beautiful savannas, and discover the beauty beneath the surface. The game viewing safaris take visitors to attractions near the tracks, but the wilderness is brimming with amazing things to see. The nature walk into the wilderness brings visitors up close to wildlife and provides them with rare and authentic wilderness experiences.

Because of the amazing setting of this amazing wilderness, a walk in this park will transport you back in time. Everything here is still in its natural state; the landscape is unique, the flora is lush, and the wildlife is untouched. Once your foot touches the great soil of Kidepo, you can feel the real cool breath. This is a sensory-rich experience, with birds singing in the trees, animals grazing, and ostriches staring at your movements.

The successful nature walk safari begins at 7 a.m. at the Apoka tourism office, where you will be met by a ranger escort. The ranger shares incredible wilderness experiences, provides travelers with a high sense of comfort and security, and is knowledgeable about recent sighting areas of attractions. The walk to Narus Valley is popular with visitors due to its short average 5km radius of pure bliss, beautiful scenery, and diverse wildlife population. This walk explores the wilderness, which includes watering holes, and visitors have the opportunity to photograph incredible wildlife scenes.

Visitors on walks into the Narus valley may see buffalos, zebras, giraffes, hartebeests, warthogs, leopards, lions, cheetahs, elephants, waterbucks, other mammal species, and a diverse array of beautiful bird species. Constant grazing of large herds of mammal species in the same area keeps the vegetation short, allowing visitors to capture incredible wildlife sightings from a distance. The Narus valley nature walk provides panoramic views of the valley, the Kidepo plains, and the Morungole mountain ranges. Namamukweny Valley is another popular walking destination for visitors who want to spend more time exploring nature and getting deeper into the wilderness.

Many visitors abandon the comfort of the safari cars and walk through the Kidepo valley, dipping their feet in the sands of the river. The Kidepo Valley walk explores the desert palms, a habitat with unique bird species, most notably the ostrich.

The length of the nature walk is determined by the weather, the physical fitness of the visitors, and the sightings in the wilderness. Half-day walks beginning at 7 a.m. and ending when the sun begins to set and wildlife species retreat to their hiding places are very popular. For a walk, wear safari shorts, hiking shoes with strong socks, light tops in dull colors, a safari hut or cap, sunglasses, and rain gear during the rainy season.

Carry water, a snack, insect repellant, sunblock, binoculars, a camera, a map, a compass, a guidebook, and a first aid kit. Please pack only necessary items in your backpack. The walk costs $30 for non-residents, $15 for foreign residents, and 10,000/= for East African citizens.

Other Safari activities to do in Kidepo Valley National Park

Game Drives

Sand Bed alongside the Kidepo River

This experience is done during the dry season and is extremely interesting, as one enjoys the wildlife experience while listening to a variety of birds enjoy the sound of their voices in the air. The sand bed is located in the northern part of the park and is lined by Borassus Palms, giving it the appearance of an oasis in the desert.

Climbing Mountain Morungole

This activity is led by IK staff who are more familiar with the animals in this area of the park. Trekking and hiking through varying nature and rocky terrain with spectacular views of the park are involved. The IK people usually entertain tourists with various dances, their unique migration history, their life, and many other things.

Community Tour

The Karamojong people, Uganda’s most remote people, surround Kidepo Valley National Park. The savannah park, which is distinguished by wide grass plains and Blue Mountains in the background, is separated from the country’s major cities; it is located in the remote northeast corner of Uganda. Kidepo National Park has a typical wilderness feel and is an excellent choice for adventure travelers.

Kidepo is a wild place with fascinating cultures, in addition to watching wildlife, the scenic landscape, and distant horizons with scattered trees and anthills other than safari cars. The Karamajong and the IK are the two most important cultural groups in Kidepo.

The Karamojong

The Karamojong are a Nilotic people. They speak Karamojong, also known as Karimojong, which is a Nilotic language. They are thought to have left Ethiopia over 500 years ago and settled in what is now north-eastern Uganda. The Karamajong share many similarities with their counterparts in northern Kenya and southwestern Ethiopia, all of whom have largely resisted the arrival of modernity. They are one of the few people in Africa who still follow traditional customs.

Karamojong-related Activities

Karamajongs are agro-pastoral herders who live in “Manyatta” homesteads. They keep their cattle in these homesteads by erecting kraals near their huts. Their love of cattle has resulted in livestock disputes, which have kept conflict a part of their culture.

The Karamajong community provides exciting Cultural Tours in Kidepo Valley National Park for visitors by putting on traditional dance performances by groups of people. It entails jumping high into the air. It’s fun to join the dancers and feel the music and strokes. Karamajong people are great makers of African jewelry and other crafts, so pick up one or two for yourself as a souvenir of your amazing cultural encounter on the trip.

The Ik

The IK are thought to have been the first Ethiopian migrants. Originally pastoralists, they lost their cattle to the Karamojongs, Turkanas, and Pokots through cattle raiding. The IK people were evicted from the park in 1962, and they returned to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. They later began subsistence farming in the mountains. The IK are now living on the fringes of society in the Morungole Mountains.

Ik cultural encounters activities

The route you take to reach the Ik people in the Morungole Mountains depends on your level of fitness and the weather conditions in the area.

When women lose their husbands or divorce, the Ik accept their inheritance. Incest is forbidden, and sex before marriage is illegal. You have a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Ik people’s culture through these and other activities on these Cultural Tours in Kidepo Valley National Park. Because of its remote location, Kidepo National Park attracts few tourists, resulting in a limited number of lodges.

When you safari Kidepo Valley National Park, you don’t have to worry about where to stay; it has accommodation for all budgets, as well as midrange and luxury options.

Other Activities to do in Kidepo Valley National Park

Game Drives

Game drives are the most popular of the activities in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Kakine Campsite

The most popular site for camping in Kidepo valley National Park is Kakine. Furthermore, there is a telescope that allows you to view wildlife in the distance. The camp site has two huts where you can cook and store your supplies. Kenya has plenty to offer and the designated game reserves and national parks protect Kenya’s game. Lets have a look at the Safari Destinations in Kenya.

Safari Destinations in Kenya

Amboseli national park.

This is one of the popular Safari Destinations in Kenya. Amboseli National Park is located in Kenya, near the Tanzanian border. The park covers an area of 151 square miles (392 sq km). It is part of a wider ecosystem that spans Kenya and Tanzania and covers an area of 3,100 square miles (8,000 sq km). This protected region is crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s roof. This national park protects two marshes and the lowlands from Mount Kilimanjaro’s foothills. Amboseli is made up of five distinct wildlife habitats. Open plains, yellow-barked acacia woods, lava-strewn rocky thorn bush, swamps, and marshes are among them. The Oldoinyo Orok massif reaches a height of 8,300 feet and stretches towards the sky (2,760 m).

The habitat groups work together to create a plethora of stunning landscapes, all rounded off with views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National Park is surrounded by a vast expanse of sky that stretches from horizon to horizon. The nights are loaded with great stargazing possibilities. Amboseli National Park is a tourist destination with a diverse and abundant wildlife population. The vast majority of visitors to Amboseli are hoping for safari and wildlife experiences. Seeing wildlife with a direct sight of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background is an unforgettable experience.

The long dry season provides wonderful opportunities to see wildlife visiting wetlands and other drinking holes. Along with elephant herds, wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see lion, cheetah, hyena, jackal, mongoose, giraffe, cape buffalo, warthog, baboon, monkeys, zebra, impala, and many species of gazelle. The principal wildlife viewing area is located in the park’s eastern side. Safari-goers may see lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhino, elephant, buffalo, and giraffe on a single morning game drive around the eastern section. In addition to these sought-after species, you may see eland, waterbuck, and zebra. Amboseli is an excellent location for exploring Africa’s pristine wilderness.

Over 400 different bird species await bird lovers. Amboseli National Park’s highlights from the skies include 47 raptor species of birds. Although many bird species can be found throughout the park, the lake, marsh, and swamp areas are among the greatest sites to see them.

Highlights

Amboseli has one of the most beautiful and scenic views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Although the mountain is in Tanzania, the best views of Kilimanjaro may be found in Kenya. When you look for photographs of the mountain, you will see that many of them were taken from the Kenya viewpoint, and practically all of them were taken within Amboseli National Park. Over 1,000 roaming elephants are one of the park’s main attractions. Aside from elephants, many people want to see some of the predator species such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. There are around 80 different animal species that work in tandem with elephants and predators. One of the most fascinating wildlife encounters is seeing elephants forage in the swampy grasslands as they splash through. They’re like nature’s bulldozers.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is situated in southern Kenya, northwest of Nairobi. The national park has a total area of 26.35 square miles (68.25 sq km). Hell’s Gate National Park shares a boundary with Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is approximately 56 miles (90 kilometers) from Nairobi, and it is located at an elevation of 6,200 feet (1,900 meters) above sea level. The main feature and inspiration for the park’s name is Hell’s Gate Gorge. Along the gorge, red-walled cliffs lead to two volcanic rock structures known as Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower. A lesser valley goes away from Central Tower to a hot springs region. The springs are sufficiently hot to burn you. Within the park’s limits are two extinct volcanoes known as Olkaria and Hobley’s.

Hell’s Gate National Park is a popular Kenyan national area due to its easy access from Nairobi as well as the variety of species and spectacular landscapes that can be enjoyed during a visit to the park. The wildlife population is smaller, but the variety is vast. Predator species include the lion, leopard, hyena, serval, and cheetah. Zebra, eland, buffalo, hartebeest, klipspringer, reedbuck, hyraxes, and Thomson’s gazelle are among the other popular species. There are around 100 bird species, with some of the larger ones being the Verreaux eagle, the augur buzzard, and vultures such as the rare lammergeyer vulture. The park’s cultural facilities include a Maasai Cultural Center, where visitors can learn about Maasai tribe customs, traditions, and overall culture. This is a fantastic educational chance to learn more about an incredible group of people who have their own rituals and practices.

Highlights

The park’s main feature is Hell’s Gate Gorge, with Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower serving as secondary highlights. The park draws people due to its beautiful scenery and wildlife, as well as its proximity to Nairobi. The park inspired both the Disney film Lion King and the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Trekking through the park is a highlight because most Kenyan national parks do not allow hiking. Cultural discovery of the Masai people is a highlight for individuals with cultural interests that go beyond the natural beauty of the wilderness.

Lake Nakuru National park.

Lake Nakuru Park is situated northwest of Nairobi in southwestern Kenya. The national park is 73 square miles in size (188 sq km). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to flamingos and other animals. The park’s foundation is Lake Nakuru, which serves as a wildlife haven. The highest depth is only 6 feet (1.8 m), with an average depth of 1 foot (30 m), making it accessible to animals. It is one of the Rift Valley lakes, located 5,755 feet (1,754 m) above sea level. Nakuru is an alkaline lake, which attracts a variety of birds and wildlife to its borders. The national park and lake are well known for their tens of thousands of flamingos which number in the millions at times. The finest site to view the beautiful flamingos is from Baboon Cliff.

The area’s tranquil landscapes include grasslands, marsh, outcrops, rocky cliffs, and sedge. Acacia trees with yellow bark add to the authentic African wilderness experience. An area approximately 116 miles (188 km) has been enclosed to establish a secure area for both black and white rhinoceroses as well as giraffes. The park is home to around 70 white rhinos and 25 eastern black rhinoceros. It has one of the greatest rhino collections in Kenya. Wildlife is abundant, with a thriving predator population to match the availability of prey. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas are examples of predators. Large pythons may also be found. The giraffe and two rhino species are mammalian highlights, although there are several other species. The waterbuck is more common in this park than in others.

There are a few hippopotamuses that can be discovered in the lake’s reeds. Visitors may also witness Reedbuck and Bushbuck in addition to the waterbuck. Birdwatchers can expect to witness African fish eagles, Verreaux’s eagles, Goliath herons, kingfishers, and a plethora of flamingos. It is an excellent location for birdwatching with over 400 bird species. There are over a dozen various types of predator birds. Because of the flamingo population, the lake and national park have acquired the moniker “the greatest bird display on earth.” The small lake is rich in algae, which attracts flamingos, which consume approximately 551,155 pounds (250,000 kg) of algae per acre every year. Lake Nakuru National Park is only 102 miles (164 kilometers) from Nairobi, making it convenient to take a day excursion out of the city to witness this incredible animal encounter.

Highlights

The sheer number of flamingos is impressive. Masai Mara National Park is located in Kenya along the Tanzanian border and is adjacent to Serengeti National Park. The Masai people are honored by the name of the park region. Masai Mara has an area of 580 square miles (1,510 sq km). It is the most northern part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The principal rivers draining the reserve are the Sand River, Talek River, and Mara River. The park is separated into two sections: the inner portion, which features pure wilderness, and the outside portion, which permits Masai cattle to graze. The Masai Mara is famous for its number and diversity of huge plains species as well as its predator species. It is thought to be the only area in Kenya where the animal population currently resembles what it formerly was. Despite the abundance, wildlife is disappearing, and thankfully, the preserve exists to safeguard it. It is one of the most sought-after wildlife viewing places in Africa.

The Masai Mara is home to a variety of animals, including hippo, giraffe, waterbuck, reedbuck, roan antelope, warthog, eland, topi, gazelle, zebra, baboon, crocodile, several monkey species, and black rhino. With the exception of the mountain gorilla, all of Africa’s Big 7 can be included in your wildlife sightings. The Mara is home to Kenya’s greatest lion population. Predator species are usually always at the top of a traveler’s wish list for wildlife viewing. The good news is that they are available on the Mara. The park is home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, and many types of mongoose. The Masai Mara is part of the wider Mara Ecosystem, which includes the protecting ranches of Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet. All of these activities are coordinated in recognition of the importance of maintaining the region’s wildness and animals.

Although the plains and woodland areas are magnificent, it is the wildlife that draws visitors to Masai Mara. Most visitors come between July and October in the hopes of witnessing the wildebeest migration through the park. There are also several options for historical and cultural encounters. You can tour Masai villages and cultural centers, which will all introduce you to the Masai culture. If you pay close attention, you might improve your jumping ability.

Highlights

The Masai Mara is widely regarded as Kenya’s premier safari location and the crown gem of wildlife watching. The park is home to 95 different animals, amphibian, and reptile species. It is also a bird lover’s paradise, with over 400 different species of birds. Whether in Tanzania or Kenya, flying over the millions of wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle is a breathtaking highlight. Predator sightings could include lions, leopards, cheetahs, servals, jackals, and hyenas.

If the migratory herd has crossed the Mara River and is grazing over the plains and vegetation of the wildness area, large herds such as 200,000 zebra, 18,000 elands, 500,000 gazelle, 97,000 topi, and the 1.3 million wildebeest can be seen. The entire Mara experience is tremendous. The wildlife watching is enormous, the panoramas are breathtaking, the undulating hills appear to go on forever, and it’s all interlaced with groves of acacia and related shrubbery. The Mara River and its tributaries cut through the park, forming beautiful riverine woodlands.

Mount Longonot National Park

Mount Longonot National Park is located in Kenya’s southwestern region. The national park is 59 square miles in size (154 sq km). The national park is only 37.2 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Nairobi making it easily accessible. It is located southeast of Lake Naivasha. Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano with a peak elevation of 9,108 feet (2,776 m). The mountain and park are named from a Maasai phrase that means “steep ridges” or “mountains with many spurs.” Near the summit of the mountain lies a caldera measuring 5 miles by 7.5 miles (8 x 12 km). The volcano’s real cone is capped by another crater that spans 1.12 miles (1.8 km) across.

Small plants cover the crater floor, and steam vents can be discovered along portions of the crater’s edges. Although the park isn’t famous for her wildlife, it is present. Lower elevation visitors might expect to encounter buffalo, giraffe, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, and zebra.

Highlights

Mount Longonot is the park’s crowning achievement. The walk to the peak, which spans around the crater rim, is the park’s main appeal and highlight. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get outside and experience nature.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is situated immediately south of central Kenya, adjacent to and inside the Nairobi metropolitan area. Visitors landing at Nairobi International Airport can physically view the park and potential wildlife as they fly over and land. There is no other place on the planet where such a diverse variety of nature and species is so close to a large city. The city core is only four miles (6.4 kilometers) from the reserve’s fauna. The national park, which covers 45.26 square miles (117.2 square kilometers), was the first to be formed in Kenya. The park is smaller than the majority of Kenyan and African national parks. Despite its diminutive size, it has a wide range of habitats. The broad plains, meadows, and scattered acacia trees occupy the majority of the ecosystems.

There is also a highland forest, steep gorges, fragmented bush company, and riverine forest in the park. The diverse ecosystems attract a wide range of animals and bird species. The city visitors and the wildlife of the national park are literally neighbors, almost living in the same space. The metropolitan area is separated from the national park wilderness region by an electric fence. The park is located slightly over 5,000 feet (1,524 m) above sea level, with elevations ranging from 5,030 feet to 5,774 feet (1,533 to 1,760 m) and, despite its size, contains a variety of habitats and wildlife species.

Almost everyone who travels to Africa hopes to witness a predator animal. Predators including as lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena abound in Nairobi National Park. Buffalo, black rhino, baboon, eland, gazelle, hartebeest, hippopotamus, impala, giraffe, wildebeest, and waterbuck are among the other large animal species. The elephant is one of the missing creatures that most people wish to see. Impala, wildebeest, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, and eland are among the species found in this park. Each of these species can be expected to be seen during a visit.

There are numerous bird species, with the vulture and ostrich being two of the larger or more intriguing. The ostrich is a common sight on the plains. Crowned Crane, Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbill, Egyptian Goose, and Black-necked Heron are among the other large species. There are various songbirds that provide an additional experience for birdwatchers. Nairobi National Park is dedicated to rhino conservation, and its efforts are among the most successful in Africa. Seeing these gorgeous creatures is undoubtedly a highlight. The proximity of this animal collection to Nairobi’s industrial city is a source of attraction for many individuals.

The Nairobi Safari Walk is a terrific way to get some fresh air and see the wildness that is literally next door to one of Africa’s most industrial towns. Aside from that, most people are perplexed by the abundance of wildlife that is so easily accessible so close to such a large metropolis.

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is located in southeastern Kenya, just northwest of its sister park, Tsavo West. The lions are said to have evolved this odd behavior for various reasons among which include; avoiding tsetse flies and the heat of the lower ground. Being perched on acacia and fig tree branches also helps them to spot their prey easily, since they can see them from a great height. Aside from the tree-climbing lions, there are also the Uganda Kobs, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, and zebras that can be viewed in this sector.

Experiential game drive

Tourists to Queen Elizabeth National Park can also engage in lion trekking, one of the most thrilling experiences in the Park. You will learn how carnivores build their territories by urinating along the area they have defined for their territory, which helps to avoid other lion pride from raiding their territory. You may also observe female lions hunting in the wild while spending time with the carnivores.

Other pursuits in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge

Another protected region that offers good chimpanzee trekking experiences in Uganda is Kyambura Gorge. This gorge is around 30 kilometers from the park headquarters and 420 kilometers from Kampala. It is 1km long and 100 meters deep and connects to the Kazinga waterway via a marsh that forms the reserve’s northern boundary.

The Kyambura gorge gets its name from a legend in which the river once flooded and swept up local people with their property. When the waters receded, people followed the river in pursuit of their friends but were unsuccessful. So they returned lamenting that Kyambura meaning “I couldn’t find it” in the native language, thus naming the place Kyambura. This picturesque valley was formed by the turbulent waters of the Kyambura River. The gorge contains a rain forest and a river that serves as a home for some of the park’s species.

The only area in Queen Elizabeth National Park where habituated chimps can be found is in Kyambura Gorge. It also houses primates such as red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, baboons, and vervet monkeys. Birds such as the African pigmy kingfisher, Blue headed kingfisher, falcons, black and white conquering hornbill, and many others can be spotted.

According to biologists, there are only 80 chimps left in the gorge. The chimps in this region have been habituated for about two years, so they are comfortable with humans and can go about their everyday lives in their presence.

Chimpanzee tracking permits can be purchased through your tour company or they can be purchased directly at the park headquarters or the (VIC) Visitor Information Center in Mweya.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge is not tough, but it does include trudging up and down hills seeking for chimps, which can be easily found owing to their loud yells and hooting that can be heard from a distance. If no voices are heard, you may follow their foot prints. When the Chimps are spotted, they can be observed playing, engaging with each other, mating. These chimps here frequently climb down the trees when they detect people, allowing you the opportunity to snap fantastic shots of them up close.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge is divided into two sessions: morning and afternoon. There are only 8 permits available per session, for a total of 16 permits per day. If you include this hiking adventure in your itinerary, you will be assigned a guide who will accompany you to the gorge following the briefing. The entire exercise lasts approximately 2-3 hours.

The odds of seeing chimps in Kyambura gorge are lower than in Kibale Forest National Park because the chimps occasionally wander too far down the gorge hunting for food, making it difficult to get them. On making contact, the experience is unforgettable. Only persons above the age of 12 are permitted to track chimps because they must be old enough to withstand the physical and emotional aspects of the exercise.

Trekkers can also view hippopotamus, elephants bathing in the valley, and other forest animals and primates along the river, in addition to the chimps.

Aside from Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge, other activities include nature walks and birding. The gorge may be explored on foot, providing you the opportunity to engage with wildlife and nature. Don’t miss out on this wonderful wildlife sanctuary in the heart of Queen Elizabeth Park.

Chimpanzee trekking regulations:

The rules and guidelines are the same as in other Ugandan chimp tracking areas:

You must follow these basic chimp trekking regulations throughout the forest pathways for your own safety and the preservation of the chimps.

Because chimps share 98% of their DNA genes with humans, they can catch your sickness. When you are sick, you must not visit the forest to track them.

People interested in chimp tracking must be at least 12 years old.

Leave no litter in the forest. In other words, whatever you take there should be carried back with you.

If you need to urinate or defecate, do so off the route and bury your waste in a 30-centimeter-deep hole with any toilet paper.

Keep as quiet as possible if you want to see more and enjoy everything the woodland has to offer.

Keep at least 8 meters (25 feet) away from the chimp at all times. • Do not copy the chimp’s vocalization; you may not do it correctly and will not get valuable experience.

Do not eat near the chimps. • Never chase the chimps; you may get terrible outcomes because they are wild even while acclimated.

Avoid using flush photography because it may frighten the chimp away.

Pay attention to everything your guide says; you’ll have a great time in the forest jungle.

Other things to do in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

DRIVES IN GAME

The picturesque game drives that allow you to see even the most elusive of the park’s animals are the main pleasure of a visit. The exhilarating drives, which are best done in the morning, include up close sight of the park’s wildlife from the luxury of a car. Your driver guide is familiar with the various trucks in the park and will take you in search of various species.

During the game drives, you might see an elephant, the world’s largest land mammal, feeding with its trunk, a lion preying on an antelope, or a hyena eagerly waiting to consume the lion’s carcass.

leftovers from a long way away Throughout the day, several animal groups such as buffalo herds and Uganda kobs traverse the game area. Warthogs, leopards, and the huge forest hog are among the other animals you may encounter on your game drive.

Birding

Queen Elizabeth National Park is a popular birding destination in Uganda. The park is a home for over 600 bird species, so avid bird watchers will have a field day. Sedge warblers, Papyrus canary, martial eagle, pink-backed pelican, yellow-throated cuckoo, and Verreaux’s Eagle Owl are just a few of the birds that will grace your photographic memories as they occupy the park’s vast grasslands, woods, and wetlands. Don’t miss the flamingos at Katwe and Bunyampaba salt lakes.

A boat trip

The boat trip/launch cruise on the Kazinga Canal, a long natural water channel connecting Lake Edward to Lake George, is an exciting event for park visitors.

During the trip, passengers can take in the different sights and sounds that the park’s abundant aquatic life has to offer. Aside from the big hippopotamuses swimming in the waterways, the fearsome Nile crocodiles sunbathing peacefully on the channel banks for a taste of the warm sun are some of the once-in-a-lifetime encounters you will have on the tour. The Pied Kingfishers attempting to catch a meal are not to be missed.

ISHASHA’S TREE CLIMBING LIONS

It’s not every day that you see a lion climbing a tree; in fact, climbing one was thought to be a safe option if you ever found yourself being followed by one. Not while in the Ishasha section, which is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Lions perched on acacia and fig trees are a magical sight to behold here.

Whether it is for a better view of their surroundings, including potential prey such as the Uganda Kob that grazes nearby, for a cool breeze in the trees, or to avoid the notorious bites from the tsetse flies on the ground below, the reason for the lions choosing residence up the trees remains a mystery. The Ishasha sector, where these lions can be found, is accessible while traveling to or from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest on the way to or from gorilla trekking in the forest. Aside from the magnificent tree climbing king of the jungle, the sector is also home to herds of buffalo, vast numbers of elephants, warthogs, and antelopes, all of which make for a fantastic trip to the game park.
