Sipi Falls:

The Sipi Falls are some of Uganda’s most beautiful waterfalls. The Sipi Falls, located at the foot of Mount Elgon, are one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions. There are three levels, with the highest level attracting the most visitors.

Mountain gorillas, like many other wild animals, are inherently afraid of humans and will flee or become hostile if confronted. Gorilla charging is uncommon, although it might happen if the group is approached without a habituation period. Mountain gorilla habituation is the process of acclimating these kind and charming creatures to humans and teaching them to regard humans as any other harmless thing in their habitat. The habituation process for gorillas normally takes two to three years, but it can go up to five years. During the habituation stage, gorilla group members are also named.

A group of trackers, guides, and researchers approach a gorilla troop in a non-threatening manner with the goal of determining the best way to communicate with the gorillas. This is perilous because gorillas, particularly the dominant silverback, would want to assert their dominance, and some level of aggression should be expected. The key to gorilla habituation is to get the approval of the dominant male. Once this is accomplished, closeness to the group can follow. After the gorilla group has finished the habituation procedure, they are examined before being opened to tourists.

Gorilla Habituation process.

The gorilla habituation process began in central Africa in the 1960s, spearheaded by Dr Dian Fossey along with tracking, identification, range mapping, and other research activities that are still being implemented by gorilla conservation authorities today. Gorilla habituation is a useful tool for gorilla conservation projects and research because it enables for easy monitoring of gorilla groups’ security, health, population trends, social behavior, and feeding patterns. It is also possible to quantify the revenue earned by local communities, governments, and businesses, particularly tourism-related businesses, using gorilla habituation. Gorilla habituation is risky and time consuming. As a result of regular contact with humans, it exposes gorillas to hazards such as sickness. Furthermore, for habituation to be considered successful, a significant amount of time must be set aside.

Mountain gorilla conservation and habituation began in the early 1990s with the establishment of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in 1991. This involved three gorilla groups; the Katendegyere and Mubare groups in the Buhoma sector and the Kyagulilo Group in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi in the initial phase of habituation. In 1993, the first two groups were available to tourism activity. However, the Katendegyere group, which had 11 members (down from 3 in 1998), crossed to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Sarambwe Game Reserve, while the Mubare Group, which was led by Ruhondeza (a Silverback gorilla who died in 2012), now has 12 members following a series of adjustments. The Kyaguliro, a group that was the target of a poaching incident and lost four members, now has 18 members due to fresh births.

As gorilla trekking became more popular in the mid-1990s, so did the need for new Gorilla families to be habituated because the original group just couldn’t meet all of the requests. This resulted in the formation of two additional groups, the Habinyanja and Nkuringo. However, the Nkuringo group was only opened to tourism in 2004 because to a number of problems, including inadequate infrastructure.

With the need to disseminate its significance to the majority of Bwindi, the third phase of habituation began in 2006, with two additional groups habituated and opened up for tourism in 2008. The Nshongi and Bitukura tribes were among them. The Nshongi group in the park’s southern sector was the largest gorilla group ever recorded, with over 30 members at the time. This was the outcome of a major split in the group, which resulted in its merger with another group. In 2008, two more groups were habituated: the Kahungye Group in the Park’s southern half and the Oruzogo Group in the forest’s western section, which had 30 and 20 members, respectively.

The former splintered into nine members to form the Busingye Group.

Trekking vs. Habituation Experience with Gorillas

Gorilla habituation experience is a newly developed activity for mountain gorilla enthusiasts in which four tourists are given the opportunity to experience the joy of the Gorilla habituation process for four hours under the supervision of studied and qualified trackers. This is in contrast to gorilla trekking, in which 8 people are assigned to each gorilla group and can only observe the gorillas for one hour. The Uganda Wildlife Authority pioneered gorilla habituation experience in 2014, which is exclusively available in Uganda.

You will have more time to learn about their way of life, take more photos, observe them interact, feed, build nests, and groom themselves during the gorilla habituation process. You will also learn about the roles that each member of the family plays. The gorilla habituation experience, which includes park entry, costs $1500 compared to the $700 spent for one hour of gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is less expensive than the habituation experience. The Uganda Wildlife Authority designated two gorilla populations in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi for habituation in 2018-2019.

The Bikyinji family, which has 22 members, is located in the Rushaga sector of the park, as is the Bushaho family. The Bushaho family split from the Nkuringo family to form a new one. This group is commanded by a dominating silverback named Bahati (after the location where the group was originally spotted), who commands three adult females, an infant, a juvenile, a subadult, and a black back.

What happens during the Bwindi gorilla habituation experience?

Visitors scheduled for gorilla habituation experience/process meet at the Bwindi park headquarters in Rushaga at 7:30 a.m. for a briefing by authorities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the research team before the activity begins at 8:00 a.m. The gorilla habituation process requires a minimum of 15 years of age. It is recommended that anyone wishing to participate in the habituation process be physically fit enough to hike to the steeper and denser parts of the forests. These gorillas tend to wander to difficult-to-reach terrain and portions of the park. Sick people are not permitted to participate in the gorilla habituation procedure. Human infections such as influenza pose a concern to mountain gorillas. When photographing mountain gorillas, avoid using flash cameras. Do not try to imitate or mock gorillas. To avoid agitating them, keep at least 10 meters away.

The greatest time to see gorillas is usually during the high seasons. These go from December to March and June to October. However, you can also visit during the low season in April, May, October, or November. However, these months are unfavorable because of severe rains which make hiking difficult.

Due to the strong demand from travelers for the gorilla habituation experience and the limited amount of permits available per day, you must book early – at least 6 months before your visit is recommended. Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your travel operator. Booking tickets requires your passport information.

Long-sleeved shirts made of synthetic material that dries quickly, gardening gloves, a hut, long trousers, a rain jacket, bottles of drinking water, hiking shoes, a camera, a walking stick, and, of course, insect repellents to protect you from mosquito bites should be included on parking lists of essentials. Pack some snacks or lunch because the habituation process normally takes the entire day. It’s also a good idea to employ porters who can help you carry large things and climb steep slopes.

When is the best time to go Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo?

Gorilla trekking safaris in Congo are available all year. The Virunga National Park has a tropical climate, but the best time to visit Congo for gorilla trekking tours is from May to September, during the dry season. The driest month is July, followed by August and June. Temperatures also fall slightly during those months. From December to February, there is also a shorter dry period. Buhoma Lodge

The Buhoma gorilla trekking trailhead is located about five minutes from Buhoma Lodge, which is located right outside the park. Even though it doesn’t offer the same level of luxury as other Bwindi lodging options as Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge, the Buhoma Lodge is a solid favorite among tourists.

The rooms have minimal furnishings and are roomy and comfortable. Ten cottages with double or twin beds are available. They are built on high platforms, making them excellent vantage points to see the forest beyond. There is also a family suite with two separate bedrooms for families. Each cottage has a separate veranda and en suite bathroom. The main building features a restaurant, bar, cozy fireplace, and deep, comfortable couches for guests to enjoy. It is stylishly constructed from wood with a thatched roof to blend in with the surroundings. Given how difficult a gorilla walk may be, the staff offers all visitors great massages and a laundry service gratis.

Buhoma Lodge was constructed with sustainability in mind; local materials were utilized to construct the structures, local ingredients are used in the restaurant, solar energy provides lighting, and all staff members were chosen from the neighborhood.

Clouds Mountain gorilla lodge

A family-run enterprise, Clouds was founded in collaboration with the Nkuringo neighborhood, the Ugandan Safari Company, and the African Wildlife Foundation. The lodge is a cutting-edge, neighborhood-focused business dedicated to assisting in the long-term preservation of Bwindi gorillas.

The highest lodge in Uganda, this one is located south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park at a height of more than 2,000 meters. Most hiking adventures begin at the adjacent Nkuringo trailhead because it is in the southern part of the park. The walls of the lodge are made of natural volcanic stone, and its wide windows provide stunning views of the forest beyond. The campground offers a camping area where you may set up your tent for a lower price. It features 6 classic bandas with hot showers, double beds, and private restrooms. The campground offers a restaurant where skilled cooks serve three-course dinners. Gorilla trekking, tea plantation excursions, entertainment, sightseeing, bird viewing, visits to Batwa pygmies, and nature walks are among the activities available at the Nshongi campsite. The Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza, and Busingye mountain gorilla groups are some of the gorilla families in this sector. Gorilla Valley Lodge

One of the nature lodges, Gorilla Valley Lodge is located in the Rushaga region and commands breathtaking views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The park is the second largest park in Rwanda after Akagera national park and protects the steep slope of the mountain range covering over 160 sq.km which hosts the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas and with rich eco system of bamboo forest, wetlands and open grasslands. Volcanoes national park also has five volcanoes, 3 being shared by the neighboring countries of Uganda and DRC and 2 are found with in Rwanda hosted by Volcanoes national park. These are dormant volcanic mountains that make the Virunga massif including; Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi. Volcanoes national park is about 78 KM from Kigali city and it takes about 3 hours to drive from Kigali international airport to volcanoes national park.

Volcanoes national park hosts the famous mountain gorillas with a total number of 10 habituated gorilla families making gorilla trekking the key tourism activity in the park. Volcanoes national park also hosts other primate species apart from golden monkeys and gorillas. The park is also a home to chimpanzees as well as other species of monkeys including white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, owl faced, blue and vervet monkeys. It also hosts olive baboons and nocturnal potto, bush babies and many bird species in addition to other forest wildlife. The major activity in Volcanoes National park is Gorilla tracking which is the major tourist activity in the country and remains the backbone of the tourism sector in Rwanda. There are other tourism sites at the edge of the park including Buhanga Eco-park, Folklore and Musanze caves also at the edge of the park anticipated to have formed after the volcanic eruption over 62 m years ago

Tourism activities in volcanoes national park;

Gorilla tracking;

Gorilla trekking is the key tourism activity in the volcanoes national park. Gorilla trekking is a must do activity while in Rwanda. You will have a chance to see the few mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda costs $1500 for all categories of clients including FNR, FR, and Citizens. This activity takes between 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of gorillas. Once you encounter with the gorillas, you will spend one hour with them while taking photos in close range. The ranger guide will brief you on the dos and don’ts before gorilla trekking and there after you will also be de-briefed and awarded a certificate.

Golden monkey tracking;

Volcanoes national park is also a home to golden monkeys residing in the bamboos forest. Golden monkey tracking is more/less similar to the search for gorillas but the difference is that the Golden monkeys leave less evidence of their presence and are a little more silent making it hard to see them. They are uniquely identified by their bright Golden fur as you watch them from a close distance as they play jumping from tree to tree. They feed on bamboo shoots, leaves, roots, insects and seasonal forest fruits. The rules are more less like gorilla trekking.it takes about 2 to 4 hours

Dian Fossey Hike

Dian Fossey was an American Zoologist and researcher who dedicated her entire life to protect and study the mountain gorillas having started way back in 1966 until December 1985 when she was hacked to death by poachers whom she had battled with for a long time. She dedicated her entire life studying the gorillas on a daily basis. After her death, she was buried at Kansoke Research Station which has become a tourist attraction since then. You will visit this center to learn about her life and her contribution to the conservation of mountain gorillas in the volcanoes national park.

Hiking

Volcanoes national park hosts 3 dormant volcanoes that facilitate mountain climbing. With their montane vegetation, it provides a beautiful scenery that can be explored while on the hike. These three volcanoes include Sabinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi making hiking one of the best experiences in Volcanoes National park. Hiking takes place on the different mountains including Sabinyo, Bisoke and the Karisimbi which provide the great views of the entire Volcanoes National Park. The highest hike will be at mount Bisoke which stands at 3711 meters above sea level, the second highest is Mount Karisimbi.Standing at the peak of Sabinyo, gives you an opportunity to be in 3 countries at the same time including Uganda, Rwanda and DRC-Congo. On top of these mountains you will enjoy great views of the other 2 volcanoes of Muhabura and Gahinga and the Twin Lakes.

Birding

Rwanda is known to have the highest bird count on the continent despite its size. Some of the prime birding destination in Rwanda include Nyungwe national park and Akagera national park. Volcanoes National park also harbors forest birds of about 2000 recorded bird species. Some of these key bird species to look out for include; Rwenzori Turaco, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, ground robin, dusky crimson wing, and the red-faced woodland warbler among others.

Nyungwe national park is a home to over 1000 mammal species and bird species in total. It has over 85 mammals, 13 primate species and 29 of them are endemic making Nyungwe national park a birding paradise and Containing 200 endemic species of trees. It’s also known as the key chimpanzee trekking destination in Rwanda with at least 2 habituated chimp groups that facilitate the chimp trekking activity and also rare Canopy walk.

Nyungwe forest covers was established in 2004 and covers over 970 sq. km of Bamboo, rain forest, grassland and swamps. Nyungwe forest harbors over 85 mammal species, 13 primate species, several reptile and Amphibian species and 275 bird species. Nyungwe national park has rich diversity composed of endemic fauna and flora, montain vegetation grassland, rain forests, bamboo and swamps. Nyungwe national park is highly elevated rising up to over 6000 ft.

WHAT TO DO AT NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Chimpanzee tracking;

Nyungwe forest national park is considered the best place to do chimp trekking in Rwanda. Chimpanzees share close to 98% of human DNA whose behavior is pretty much like humans except a few elements of being wild that are not habituated fully.  It has at least 2 habituated groups and the biggest group has over 60 members and the small one with at least 30 members and can be tracked in close range without any interference. The activity takes between 2 to 4 hours and once you encounter with the chimps, you will be allowed to spend at least an hour with them while taking photos in close range. While on your chimp trekking, you will have a chance to see other primate species including; Rwenzori colobus monkeys, Silver Monkey, Golden Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, L’Hoest’s Monkey, Vervet Monkey, Grey-Checked Mangabey, Olive Baboon, Dent’s mona Monkey, and Hamlyn’s Monkey.

Nyungwe Canopy Walk

Nyungwe forest is one of the biggest well reserved montane rain forest in the central Africa and this facilitates the Canopy walk which is a unique activity that is offered in Nyugwe national park in the whole of East Africa. It’s a 2-hour activity that lies 50 m above the forest giving the best spectacular views of the forest and the surrounding communities. For safety reason, children below 6 years are not allowed to participate in this experience. This walk is managed in 3 reception centers including Kitabi, Uwinka and Gisakura. The birds, monkeys and chimps are sometimes seen jumping over the trees as you stand above the forest.

Hiking at the forest;

Nyungwe national park offers you opportunity to hike on different 13 hiking trails which will take you between 1 to 8 hours depending on the distance of the trail. The longest is Bigugu trail which takes you about 8 hours. While on the hike, you will explore the forest diversity of fauna and flora, and its beautiful scenery, and each hike offers a different exception experience. You will also hike to the water falls which begins at Gisakura guesthouse and may take you 3-6 hours depending on the speed and the stopovers you have. The hike will take you through different interesting water streams through rough terrain towards the small waterfall giving you a unique experience of the wild.

Bird Watching;

Nyungwe forest has a total of over 300 bird species recorded and 29 of them are endemic making Nyungwe a key birding destination in Rwanda. The major species include; Rwenzori Turaco, the blue-headed sunbird, blue Turaco, regal sunbird, white bellied Robin Chat, Red Collared Babbler, Handsome Francolin, Crowned Hornbill, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, and Chapin’s Flycatcher among others. The guide will take you on this birding experience which lasts for about 3 hours

Accessing Nyugwe national park;

Nyugwe national park can be accessed by road from Kigali city which is about 230km approximately 5 hours’ drive. While on your way to Nyugwe from Kigali city, you will have an opportunity to see a lot of tourist attractions on the way which may include; National museum, Arboretum, Gikongoro genocide memorial center, Bisesero memorial center, Nyanza Kings palace and a lot of souvenir shops. You can as well organize charter flights with Rwanda air and fly into the park to shorten the road distance.

Where to stay in Nyungwe national park;

There are several accommodation establishments to stay in including; Nyungwe guest house, Nyungwe forest lodge, Nyungwe top view hotel, Gisakura family Hostel among others.

Key to note is that these gorillas are the same in all the sectors, and so don’t not worry which group you will be assigned to track. Important to note also is that when you buy a gorilla permit, you do not buy a permit for a particular group, you buy an open permit assigned to a particular gorilla sector or location and its open to any gorilla group with in that sector. As such, you may not have a chance to select a gorilla family for yourself but rather a gorilla location. You will be assigned the group to track during the morning briefing at the UWA gorilla sector office depending on the number of tourists that have showed up. However, you need to know that there are only maximum 8 people allowed to track each gorilla family.

The difference in experiences with different groups or locations may depend on the terrain of the location, the number of gorilla group members, weather at hand, the fitness of the trekkers, the movement of the gorilla families among other factors. If you have a particular group of interest, you can forward your request in advance to your tour operator who will engage management of the park and you will be allowed to track your group. if you are travelling on your own, you can make a request to UWA management in advance to accommodate your interest. However, in general, groups are assigned on the day of tracking.

How to choose the best gorilla trekking group

Fitness

Hiking is a rigorous activity that involves a lot of movement in the impenetrable forests whose landscape is sometimes ragged and will involve a lot of falling, slowing down movement, and several breaks to ensure every tourist in the group is at the same level. The park management normally equips you with walking sticks to support you during tracking. There are also community porter available at a small cost to help you carry your bag while you concentrate on the trekking. Generally, some sectors take a lot of time and require a lot of fitness and in this case Nkuringo sector and some groups in Rushaga sector. Ruhija and Buhoma are relative, and on a general perspective, they are not hard to track compared to the southern sector. Nkuringo sector would be better for the adventurous youths but not for elderly and weak. It is important to practice jogging a few months to your travel date to get your body used to the energies required to track the Gorillas.

Time at your disposal

The time at your disposal especially after tracking may dictate on the group to be assigned to or even the location. If you are going after tracking, and want to catch a flight or connect to the next destination, choosing a sector that easily connects to your next destination would be ideal. You can also request a group that is nearer so that after tracking, you can connect to your next destination. There are always advance trackers on daily that communicate with management on the location of each gorilla group, and so by the time clients set off for tracking, most of the groups’ estimated location is known.

Interests

Your interests on how you want your gorilla experience to be and the key interests in the individual member groups will determine your interested group and sector. Each gorilla group has different unique members in terms of numbers, age among others. Some groups have bigger members compared to others. Others have a composition of different age groups ranging from lead silverback, black backs, females, mothers and juveniles. Depending on your interests in group composition, you can request for the group or location that suits your interests. Some sectors give beautiful scenery compared to others for instance the southern sector of Rushaga and Nkuringo will give you spectacular views of the Virunga massif.

Special groups of people

Adventurous and energetic youth can track fairly hard groups and some special categories of people like the elderly, lame, non-fit tourists may be considered while assigning gorilla groups. Such groups should always ensure that they buy permits from the sectors that are generally not hard to track. However, situations can change on the day of tracking given the movement of gorilla group and the sector that is considered easy to track turns out hard. This is given on the general perspective. It is important to note that you will need to tell your safari guide to book for you a gorilla group/sector that favors your taste.

How & Where to book the Gorilla permit

Gorilla permits are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority, a government agency responsible for conserving all the national parks in Uganda. You can book directly with UWA Reservations Office or through your trusted tour operator to ease the procedure for you. You are advised to book for permits at least 6 months in advance especially for peak season, and at least 2 months in advance for low season. However, last minute booking is possible but not guaranteed.

Best time to Visit the Gorillas

Gorillas can be visited any time of the year due to the conducive weather all year around. Trekking can take place even during the rain and that’s why you are encouraged to carry rain jackets. Gorilla trekking is done daily from January to December. However, some seasons are more competitive than others especially peak season where booking early in advance is advisable. Peak season include June to September, and December to February. Low seasons include March to May, and October to November. The low season is also a good period for the tourists that would not prefer to meet a lot of in these protected areas. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits, at an altitude between 2,227m and 4,127m above the sea level. The park lies within the Virunga transboundary bordering 2 other national parks; that is Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga National park in DRC both of which also host the endangered mountain gorillas. The government of Uganda gazatted it to protect the few endangered mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Uganda hosts more than half of the worlds endangered mountain gorillas found in Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga Gorilla national park. The park also harbors the spacious endangered golden monkeys that inhabit the bamboo with in the park. The park has 1 transboundary habituated gorilla group called Nyakagezi which supports gorilla tracking activity with in the park

The original occupants of this forest before it was gazatted in 1991 were the Batwa tribe(pygmies) who were relocated by the government of Uganda to the neighboring community for resettlement, and thus they still attach a lot of cultural significancy to this park. They used to survive entirely on the forest for all the necessities including food, clothing, shelter, medicine, fighting weapons, making fire, getting water among others all extracted from the forest itself. The surrounding community now practices agriculture along the lower slopes because of the rich volcanic soils that support crop farming

It was also gazatted to protect and conserve the beautiful scenery formed by the 3 striking extinct volcanoes which lie along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. They include Sabinyo measuring about 3669m, followed by Gahinga 3474m, and Muhavura being the highest at 4127m. Their slopes contain various mountaine vegetation with various ecosystems giving it an astonishing beautiful scenery. This acts as water catchment areas to the surrounding communities.

Gorilla trekking;

Mgahinga Gorilla national park has 1 habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi which is tracked on daily basis. It’s a transboundary group, which used to migrate to Rwanda back to Uganda but important to note is that since 2012, it’s been stable in Uganda. The gorilla tracking starts at Ntebeko visitor information center with briefing from UWA ranger Guides on the do’s and don’ts regarding gorilla trekking and what to expect. Nyakagezi group has 9 members in the family and on a lucky day, you will be able to sight all of them. This activity takes 3 to 6 hours dependent on the movement of the gorilla family on the tracking day. Once you meet the gorillas, you will spend 1 hour observing them and taking photos in close range. Thereafter, the guides will lead you back to the point where you started for debriefing and award of certificates. This is one of the unique activities you should never miss to do. It comes once in a life time.

Volcanoes climbing; Mgahinga gorilla national park has three volcanic mountains that is Muhabura being the highest, followed by Gahinga and then Sabinyo. These are extinct volcanic mountains that are found in the Virunga transboundary in the border of 3 countries including Rwanda, DRC and Uganda. The volcanic mountains harbor montane vegetation that gives it a very beautiful scenery loved by all the mountain climbers. This hiking activity takes an entire day starting very early in the morning from Ntebeko. All the 3 volcanoes can be hiked in one day or depending on the fitness of visitors, they will decide if to climb all or chose either one or two of them. Hiking Sabinyo may take you close to 6 hours following a steep ridge up to the peak. Sabinyo peak stands in the boundary of three countries, Rwanda, DRC and Uganda. Standing at its peak gives you an opportunity to be in 3 countries at the same time. Gahinga has a swamp filled crater and giant robelia, and may take you close to 8 hours. Once at the peak of Muhavura being the highest, hikers on clear day are rewarded with the views of the Virunga volcanoes, lake Edward, Bwindi impenetrable and the peaks of Mt Rwenzori.

Golden Monkey tracking; Mgahinga-Gorilla National Park also hosts the endangered golden monkeys found in the bamboo forest within the park. Just like gorilla tracking, it starts with the briefing by the UWA ranger guides at Ntebeko visitor information office explaining the do’s and don’ts about golden monkey tracking. This activity takes about 2-5 hours depending on the movement of these primates on that particular day. Just like gorillas, you will also spend 1 hour with them taking photos in close range in their natural habitat. This activity can only be done in the Virunga’s in the whole of East African region. It should not thus not be missed on a vacation.

Batwa Cultural Experience:

The Batwa were the original occupants of the forest before it was degazetted into the national park. The forest was their survival in terms of getting food, water, clothing, shelter, hunting and defense weapons, medicine among others. This was their ancestral home. Later, they were moved out of the park and settled in the neighborhood communities surrounding the national park to receive civilization and leave the forest for conservation. Therefore, this activity is done in liaison with the Batwa living in the community to support their livelihood. They will guide you through the forest with enriching stories on how they used to stay and survive on the forest for their livelihood. This will give you an enriching cultural experience that will last a life time. This activity ends with getting to Ngaramba Cave which is one of the largest caves in the virungas that used to act as a palace and parliament for their Kingdom. The Batwa dancing group will welcome you with lots of entertainment with in the cave and outside the cave before being led to the finishing point.

Bwindi impenetrable national park has one of the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests and contains over 400 species of plants some of which are over 300 years old. More importantly, this impenetrable forest hosts over 500 mountain gorillas representing more than a half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Some of which are habituated and are tracked on a daily basis, while others are still under habituation and others not habituated. It also harbors other mammals like elephants and antelopes with estimated numbers to be over 120 including several other primate species such as velvet baboons, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and chimpanzees among others. Bwindi impenetrable national park is also a good birding destination with over 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

The national park has 4 major sectors or locations where gorilla trekking takes place. This is a major activity that attracts most of the tourists to come to Uganda. Gorilla trekking; Bwindi Gorilla national park has a total of 17 habituated gorilla groups found in the four major sectors of Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Buhoma. These gorillas are tracked on daily basis with regulated numbers of 8 as maximum per group. This activity is led by UWA rangers and guides, and starts from any of the tracking location with the briefing at the visitor information centers at 8:00 AM. Gorilla trekking takes 3 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorilla family on the tracking day or even where they slept the previous night. You will be allowed to spend only 1 hour with them after meeting them and taking photos in close range. Thereafter, the guides will lead you back to the point where you started for debriefing and award of certificates. This is one of the most rewarding experiences that give you lasting good memories. It’s a MUST do activity on a vacation in Uganda

Gorilla Habituation Experience: Gorilla habituation takes place only in Rushaga sector with the group that is still under Research that has not yet been declared for tracking. This implies that the research group is not yet used to people in comparison with the tracking groups, and as such, there are lots of movements involved in trying to follow them during the activity. Its a very regulated activity in terms of numbers allowed on daily basis which is only 4 people. This experience allows you to stay with the gorillas for only 4 hours studying their behaviors and their ways of living including de-nesting, mating, feeding, nesting among others. The 4 hours start right from nesting (where they slept the previous night). You will be led by UWA Ranger guides and Researchers, and on request you can be availed Gorilla Doctors. After the experience, you will be led back to the information Centre for de-briefing and award of certificates.

Nature walk/Walking safaris; There are nature walk trails in all the trekking sectors to facilitate those who wish to explore the “impenetrable forest” on foot, including waterfall walks, forest walks, primate encounters, mountain views and impressive birdlife. These nature walks last between 3 to 4 hours and can be led either by community guides or UWA ranger guides. You can also take along walking safari from Buhoma to Nkuringo, or from Nkuringo to Buhoma which takes about 5 hours.

Batwa Cultural experience in Rushaga; The Batwa known as pygmies were the original occupants of the forest before it was degazetted into the national park. They used to survive on the forest entirely for water, food, medicine, shelter, fire making, clothing among others. Later, they were moved out of the park and re-settled in the neighboring communities surrounding the national park. They live on the foothill and practice agriculture for domestic consumption. This activity supports them for their livelihoods. The Batwa guides together with the UWA Ranger guides will guide you through the forest with enriching stories on how they used to stay and survive on the forest for their livelihood. They will make a lot of demonstrations on fire making, how they used to fetch water using bamboos, making clothing out of the forest materials, doing visits, conducting marriage and burials, entertainment among others.  This will give you an enriching cultural experience that will last a life time. This activity ends with lots of entertainment from Batwa dancing groups.

Canoeing; This is a community-based activity done around the lakes on the foothills of the mountain slopes. Community guides will take you on a canoe experience on either lake Mutanda or lake Mulehe.These are lava dammed lakes formed by volcanicity, and as such they do not attract any fishing activity because of their depth due to their formation. Both lakes are found in Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors

Accessing Bwindi;

It can be accessed by road from Queen Elizabeth National Park to the north (2-3 hours), from Kabale to the south (1-2 hours), or from Kampala via Mbarara (6-8 hours).4WD is the most recommended vehicle since Bwindi is surrounded by hills with rugged terrain due to rains.

There are also daily buses going from Kampala to Kisoro, for those who wish to track in Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. The same bus can be used for those tracking in Ruhija but with a stopover in Kabale. Buses are also available going to Butogota through Kihihi for those tracking in Buhoma sector and others buses go straight up to Buhoma. Special hire can be used to connect you to the tracking location from the nearest town

It can also be accessed by air using local flights from Entebbe or Kajansi Airfield to Kisoro air strip or Kihihi and Kayonza airfields.
