Because of her proximity to the equator, the climate is ideal for the ecosystem. Uganda has 56 ethic tribes, all of which are friendly and welcoming to visitors. Uganda’s tourism industry has faced challenges since the country’s independence. The rebellion in Northern Uganda led by Joseph Kony reduced the number of safari tourists visiting certain parts of the country. The country’s peace has been restored, and the tourism industry is thriving, with an increasing number of visitors opting for Uganda Wildlife safaris.

Despite being landlocked, Uganda is endowed with numerous national parks, mountains, lakes, and rivers that are home to a diverse range of birds, animals, and plants. Uganda has the largest number of the endangered Mountain Gorillas in the world, making it one of the best travel destinations. Uganda has the largest Chimpanzee population in East Africa, and visitors can easily see the big five (leopards, rhinos, lions, buffaloes, and elephants) – Uganda is the best place to spot tree climbing lions while on Uganda Wildlife safaris.

Uganda Wildlife safaris attractions

Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the incredible mountain gorillas of the Virunga and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks. This is one of the Uganda Wildlife safaris that comes highly recommended by previous visitors. No other wildlife encounter in Africa, according to some, compares to the unforgettable thrill of getting up close and personal with Uganda’s wild gorillas in their natural habitat. Mountain gorillas cannot thrive outside of their natural habitat. They are only found in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which are two isolated rainforest jungles in east and central Africa. Like a medieval king’s fortress, these nations are fiercely guarding these last few enormous apes.

Game viewing in Uganda.

It’s no secret that Africa is best known for its wilderness wonders, and Uganda has a sizable share of the wild pie thanks to an incredible array of wild animals. Uganda’s untamed wilderness is home to a diverse range of savannah and forest wildlife. Mountain gorillas and chimps get the most attention, but Uganda has more than 13 primate species and some of the best primate viewing opportunities in Africa. The safari’s Big are present in Uganda’s untamed wilderness. The official list of animals found in Uganda includes 342 species of mammals from both west and east Africa. Large mammals account for 132 of the species found in Uganda, with the remaining species being small mammals. There are 94 bat species, 70 rats and mice, 33 shrews and otter shrews, eight gerbils, four elephant shrews, and a single golden mole among the small mammals.

Uganda Wildlife safaris destinations

Murchison Falls National Park:

Murchison Falls National Park is the largest conservation area in Uganda, located in Northwestern Uganda (Masindi District). The park, which spans over 3,800 square kilometers, is named after one of its most popular attractions, the Murchison Falls. The Murchison Falls are formed when the Nile River flows through a narrow gorge before plunging 42 meters in a mighty roar. The park is not what it used to be due to past insecurity in the country and unrestricted poaching. However, the park has recovered as a result of more recent conservation efforts.

The waterfall is a popular attraction, but the park is also rich in wildlife. The park is home to the largest population of the now-endangered Rothschild Giraffes in East Africa, with over 1.550 animals. Visitors on a Uganda Wildlife tour can expect to see elephants, lions, giraffes, Nile crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, antelopes, and birds as they cruise up and down the Nile. As you can see in our 4 day Murchison Falls safari package, the park’s Budongo forest is famous for chimp trekking.

Queen Elizabeth National Park:

Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda covers 2,056 square kilometers and is located near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is Uganda’s most visited park, famous for its tree climbing lions in Ishasha and the Uganda Kob. Visitors on a Uganda wildlife safari enjoy the park’s lush green scenery and diverse collection of plant, animal, and bird species. The park is home to over 660 recorded bird species, including the Kingfisher, flamingos, eagles, and storks. The park also contains the endangered Shoebill Stork. The park includes a variety of tree species, craters, savanna grasslands, swamps, lakes, and other volcanic features. A three-day safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park provides the best opportunity to see 4 of the big five while on a Uganda wildlife tour. The park is home to buffaloes, hippos, baboons, elephants, and various antelope species. Nile crocodiles can be seen in Lake Edward and Lake George, birding and game viewing at the Kazinga Channel, and chimp tracking in the Kyambura gorge. The best time to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park on a Uganda tour is during the dry season.

Kidepo valley national park

The spectacular Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the remote north eastern corner of Uganda and covers approximately 1,440 km2. Because of its remote location, the park receives fewer visitors but it is second to none in terms of variety and sheer abundance of flora and fauna. This hidden gem is a great representation of how Africa used to be before greater human intervention. CN Travel ranked it as one of the top three parks in Africa. The Kidepo Valley National Park is a stunning collection of mountains and unspoiled Savannah. A safari in Uganda allows visitors to see lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, oryx, buffalo and many more. The park also has bush babies, elephants, ostriches, baboons, and approximately 220 bird species. The kanangorok hot springs can also be found in the park’s northern section. The animals coexist with nomadic pastoralists such as the Karamajong and Ik people who live high on Morungole Mountain. Visitors on a Uganda wildlife tour can look forward to a special treat during their safari in Kidepo National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park:

Located in the south-western corner of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a lush green primeval forest. Because of its landscape and biological diversity, UNESCO has designated Bwindi as a World Heritage Site. Bwindi National Park’s breathtaking green and beautiful forests are home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The remaining species are only found in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mountain gorilla tracking is regarded as one of the top three activities to consider when visiting Africa and a Uganda safari. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park to see the endangered mountain gorillas is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that cannot be matched. Aside from gorilla tours, Bwindi is a birder’s paradise with Colobus monkeys. Bee-eaters, chap-ins flycatchers, black-billed turacos, and African green broadbills are among the bird species. During the wet season, when all resident and migratory birds congregate to feast on the abundant forest fruits and insects, birding in Uganda is at its best.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park:

Mgahinga is a gorilla trekking destination in southwestern Uganda. Mgahinga gorilla trekking entails visiting the park’s one habituated mountain gorilla family. Golden monkeys are only found in Mgahinga, Uganda. More golden monkey groups can be found in Rwanda. The park is not solely dedicated to gorillas and monkeys. The park is home to jackals, woodland elephants, buffalo and a few antelope species. Visitors on a Uganda safari to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda can also hike one of the park’s three volcanoes (Mount Sabinyo, Mt. Muhavura, and Mt. Gahinga) or go cave exploring on the Batwa trail.

Kibale Forest National Park:

Located near the Rwenzori Mountains, the park borders Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Kibale forest is well-known for chimp tracking – it is the best place in East Africa to track chimps. Chimpanzees can be found throughout Uganda and Africa, but the sheer number (1500) in Kibale forest ensures a close encounter with them while on a Uganda safari. Nature walks and a visit to the Bigodi swamp can be combined with chimp trekking in Kibale forest. Aside from chimps, the park is home to 13 other monkey species, including red colobus, L’Hoest’s, and grey-checked mangabeys. The park is home to giant forest hogs, antelopes, and over 100 butterfly species. Kibale National Park in Uganda has sections covered by swamps and grasslands and is a great place to go bird watching, with over 290 species.

Lake Mburo national park.

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s smallest but most accessible national park from Kampala. Lake Mburo is the largest of the park’s 12 water bodies. Zebras can be found in Uganda’s Lake Mburo National Park. With over 300 species congregating at the lake and its swampy shores, the park is a birder’s paradise. The absence of elephants in the park benefits the vast woodland. Antelopes, buffaloes, leopards, jackals, and hyenas abound in the park’s Savannah grass. The dry season is the best time to see animals on safari because they congregate at Lake Mburo to drink water.

The Rwenzori Mountains:

Uganda has many mountains, but the Rwenzori Mountains stand out. Tourists enjoy hiking to the top of the snow-capped Margherita peak, which is located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mountain slopes are covered in dense forests, which are home to primates, forest hogs, and a variety of bird and butterfly species. A stop by these beautiful mountains while on safari in Uganda will reward nature lovers with breathtaking scenery.

Mount Elgon national park:

Mount Elgon National Park is located in the country’s east, on the border between Uganda and Kenya. Mount Elgon is the park’s main attraction. The mountain is an extinct volcano with a 42-kilometer-wide caldera. Hikers love the Wagagai summit, as well as the hot springs and other features that make Mount Elgon National Park so appealing. Natural forests, bushes, waterfalls, caves, gorges, and canyons dot the mountain slopes. There are also various bird species and primates in the park (Colobus Monkeys, blue monkeys and vevert monkeys among others). This park should be included on any Uganda Wildlife safaris.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary:

This is a rhino sanctuary located on the way to Murchison Falls National Park. The sanctuary’s goal is to protect the country’s rhinos and eventually restock the larger parks. In many Ugandan parks, rhinos have been poached for their valuable horns. The sanctuary protects rhinos from poachers and human interference, allowing them to reproduce in a safe environment. The park has over 60 rangers and guards, and visitors can interact with conservationists to learn more about the project and Rhinos. When organizing Uganda safaris to Murchison Falls National Park, most tour companies include a stopover at the Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Aside from rhinos, rangers can assist visitors in spotting monkeys, antelopes and crocodiles. The sanctuary is ideal for relaxing, nature walks, and canoeing while observing approximately 240 bird species.

Other tourist destinations in Uganda

Lake Bunyonyi:

Lake Bunyonyi, with its 29 islands, is widely regarded as Uganda’s most beautiful lake. The lake is close to the Rwandan border and the towns of Kabale and Kisoro. Although the lake is one of the deepest in Africa, it is the sheer scenic beauty that distinguishes it and draws both international and local visitors. It provides great intimate spots to relax and watch the day go by while planning your next activity. One can also go watch the Batwa Pygmies’ traditional dances or hop from one island to another by boat, spotting the various island villages, schools, and settlements. The lake is close to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and visitors like to stop by on their way to see mountain gorillas.

Source of the Nile:

A safari in Uganda should include a two-day visit to the Nile’s source in Jinja, which includes whitewater rafting. The Nile River is one of the world’s three longest lakes, passing through several countries after leaving Uganda, including Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt. Jinja is a small, peaceful, and well-planned former industrial town with stunning scenery. Enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise with a nice Nile Beer (local beer inspired by the Nile). The Nile River also offers opportunities for camping, fishing, rafting, kayaking, and the increasingly popular bungee jumping.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre:

The Uganda government established the center in Entebbe for the purpose of education and wildlife conservation. The center was recently renovated and has expanded significantly in recent years. The number and variety of animals, birds, and reptiles has grown. Those visiting Uganda for short workshops and conferences will find the Entebbe Zoo to be an excellent place to sample the country’s flora and fauna.

Sipi Falls:

The Sipi Falls are some of Uganda’s most beautiful waterfalls. The Sipi Falls, located at the foot of Mount Elgon, are one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions. There are three levels, with the highest level attracting the most visitors.

Uganda Gorilla Habituation Experience

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

East Africa Safaris

gorilla safaris

Gorilla Tours

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Travel Blog

Uganda Attractions

Uganda Safaris

The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda provides an unforgettable four-hour encounter with mountain gorillas. Mountain gorilla habituation is the process of acclimating these kind and charming creatures to humans and teaching them to regard humans as any other harmless thing in their habitat. The habituation process for gorillas normally takes two to three years, but it can go up to five years. During the habituation stage, gorilla group members are also named.

A group of trackers, guides, and researchers approach a gorilla troop in a non-threatening manner with the goal of determining the best way to communicate with the gorillas. This is perilous because gorillas, particularly the dominant silverback, would want to assert their dominance, and some level of aggression should be expected. The key to gorilla habituation is to get the approval of the dominant male. Once this is accomplished, closeness to the group can follow. After the gorilla group has finished the habituation procedure, they are examined before being opened to tourists.

Gorilla Habituation process.

The gorilla habituation process began in central Africa in the 1960s, spearheaded by Dr Dian Fossey along with tracking, identification, range mapping, and other research activities that are still being implemented by gorilla conservation authorities today. Gorilla habituation is a useful tool for gorilla conservation projects and research because it enables for easy monitoring of gorilla groups’ security, health, population trends, social behavior, and feeding patterns. It is also possible to quantify the revenue earned by local communities, governments, and businesses, particularly tourism-related businesses, using gorilla habituation. Gorilla habituation is risky and time consuming. As a result of regular contact with humans, it exposes gorillas to hazards such as sickness. Furthermore, for habituation to be considered successful, a significant amount of time must be set aside.

Gorilla habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable forest.

Mountain gorilla conservation and habituation began in the early 1990s with the establishment of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in 1991. This involved three gorilla groups; the Katendegyere and Mubare groups in the Buhoma sector and the Kyagulilo Group in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi in the initial phase of habituation. In 1993, the first two groups were available to tourism activity. However, the Katendegyere group, which had 11 members (down from 3 in 1998), crossed to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Sarambwe Game Reserve, while the Mubare Group, which was led by Ruhondeza (a Silverback gorilla who died in 2012), now has 12 members following a series of adjustments. The Kyaguliro, a group that was the target of a poaching incident and lost four members, now has 18 members due to fresh births.

As gorilla trekking became more popular in the mid-1990s, so did the need for new Gorilla families to be habituated because the original group just couldn’t meet all of the requests. This resulted in the formation of two additional groups, the Habinyanja and Nkuringo. However, the Nkuringo group was only opened to tourism in 2004 because to a number of problems, including inadequate infrastructure.

With the need to disseminate its significance to the majority of Bwindi, the third phase of habituation began in 2006, with two additional groups habituated and opened up for tourism in 2008. The Nshongi and Bitukura tribes were among them. The Nshongi group in the park’s southern sector was the largest gorilla group ever recorded, with over 30 members at the time. This was the outcome of a major split in the group, which resulted in its merger with another group. In 2008, two more groups were habituated: the Kahungye Group in the Park’s southern half and the Oruzogo Group in the forest’s western section, which had 30 and 20 members, respectively.

The former splintered into nine members to form the Busingye Group.

Trekking vs. Habituation Experience with Gorillas

Gorilla habituation experience is a newly developed activity for mountain gorilla enthusiasts in which four tourists are given the opportunity to experience the joy of the Gorilla habituation process for four hours under the supervision of studied and qualified trackers. This is in contrast to gorilla trekking, in which 8 people are assigned to each gorilla group and can only observe the gorillas for one hour. The Uganda Wildlife Authority pioneered gorilla habituation experience in 2014, which is exclusively available in Uganda.

You will have more time to learn about their way of life, take more photos, observe them interact, feed, build nests, and groom themselves during the gorilla habituation process. You will also learn about the roles that each member of the family plays. The gorilla habituation experience, which includes park entry, costs $1500 compared to the $700 spent for one hour of gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is less expensive than the habituation experience. The Uganda Wildlife Authority designated two gorilla populations in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi for habituation in 2018-2019.

The Bikyinji family, which has 22 members, is located in the Rushaga sector of the park, as is the Bushaho family. The Bushaho family split from the Nkuringo family to form a new one. This group is commanded by a dominating silverback named Bahati (after the location where the group was originally spotted), who commands three adult females, an infant, a juvenile, a subadult, and a black back.

What happens during the Bwindi gorilla habituation experience?

Visitors scheduled for gorilla habituation experience/process meet at the Bwindi park headquarters in Rushaga at 7:30 a.m. for a briefing by authorities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the research team before the activity begins at 8:00 a.m. The gorilla habituation process requires a minimum of 15 years of age. It is recommended that anyone wishing to participate in the habituation process be physically fit enough to hike to the steeper and denser parts of the forests. These gorillas tend to wander to difficult-to-reach terrain and portions of the park. Sick people are not permitted to participate in the gorilla habituation procedure. Human infections such as influenza pose a concern to mountain gorillas. When photographing mountain gorillas, avoid using flash cameras. Do not try to imitate or mock gorillas. To avoid agitating them, keep at least 10 meters away.

The greatest time to see gorillas is usually during the high seasons. These go from December to March and June to October. However, you can also visit during the low season in April, May, October, or November. However, these months are unfavorable because of severe rains which make hiking difficult.

Due to the strong demand from travelers for the gorilla habituation experience and the limited amount of permits available per day, you must book early – at least 6 months before your visit is recommended. Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your travel operator. Booking tickets requires your passport information.

Long-sleeved shirts made of synthetic material that dries quickly, gardening gloves, a hut, long trousers, a rain jacket, bottles of drinking water, hiking shoes, a camera, a walking stick, and, of course, insect repellents to protect you from mosquito bites should be included on parking lists of essentials. Pack some snacks or lunch because the habituation process normally takes the entire day. It’s also a good idea to employ porters who can help you carry large things and climb steep slopes.

Accommodation in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

East Africa Safaris

gorilla safaris

Gorilla Tours

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Travel Blog

Accommodation in Mgahinga

Golden monkey trekking

Gorilla safaris

Gorilla Trekking

Uganda safaris

A gorilla safari in Uganda is never complete without lodging. Gorilla trekking safaris in DR Congo provide guests with a one-of-a-kind and exceptional gorilla experience. The rise in gorilla permit prices in Rwanda and Uganda has increased the demand for Congo gorilla tours and safaris among price-conscious travelers. A gorilla permit in Virunga National Park, Congo, costs $400, while permits in Rwanda cost $1500 and $700 in Uganda.

As a result, Gorilla safaris in Congo are designed to provide our visitors with a less expensive but still unique opportunity to go gorilla trekking in Dr. Congo’s great Virunga National Park. Virunga is home to eight habituated gorilla families: Kabirizi, Humba, Mapuwa, Lulengo, Rugendo, Nyakamwe, Munyaga, and Bageni.

When is the best time to go Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo?

Gorilla trekking safaris in Congo are available all year. The Virunga National Park has a tropical climate, but the best time to visit Congo for gorilla trekking tours is from May to September, during the dry season. The driest month is July, followed by August and June. Temperatures also fall slightly during those months. From December to February, there is also a shorter dry period. The wet season in the Virunga National Park occurs in November, which is by far the wettest month of the year. This may not be the best time to visit Congo for gorilla trekking safaris and tours. However, if you travel between October and November or March and May, you may be able to get unmatchable deals from lodging properties due to low season and discounted gorilla permits.

Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park is located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This reserve lies in the Virunga volcano ranges which extend into Rwanda (Volcanoes national park) and Uganda (Mgahinga gorilla national park). Virunga was established in 1925 and was one of Africa’s first protected areas. Over 300 mountain gorillas live in Virunga National Park, mostly in the park’s southern areas. The Congolese National Park Authorities and the Institute Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature manage Virunga National Park (ICCN)

Gorilla trekking tours and safaris in Congo are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, made possible by the presence of these primates in Virunga National Park. These primates are charming, intelligent, smart, and friendly to interact with. All treks in the Park begin at the Bukima Patrol post in Congo and last between 1 and 3 hours.

Trekking Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Congo.

The only national park in Congo where visitors can trek the infamous eastern lowland gorillas in their natural habitat is Kahuzi-Biega national park. It also has the largest population of eastern lowland gorillas, with approximately 250 individuals. The species, also known as Grauer’s gorilla, is the largest of four gorilla subspecies, which include Mountain gorillas, Western lowland gorillas, Eastern lowland gorillas, and cross river gorillas.

Their primary foods include fruit, bamboo shoots, and other herbaceous materials. The majority of the lowland gorillas in the park have been habituated, which means they are quite at ease in the presence of humans.

A gorilla permit for eastern lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega national park costs USD 400 per person. Trekking usually starts at 7 a.m. with a briefing. Trekkers are then divided into groups of no more than eight people.

Trekking eastern lowland gorillas in the park can take 4 to 6 hours or more, depending on the gorillas’ location in the forest. Eastern lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega can take even longer hours, especially if the gorillas have moved deep into the forest in search of food. This may make trekking difficult for visitors, especially if those who are not in peak physical and mental condition.

What is the cost of Gorilla Trekking in the DR Congo?

The cost of seeing mountain gorillas in DR Congo varies depending on the level of accommodation and mode of transportation used. Nonetheless, the gorilla trekking permit in Virunga National Park is currently $400. However, we arrange all-inclusive gorilla tour packages to the Democratic Republic of Congo for all visitors with no hidden costs based on your travel budget and time. In this article, we will dive right into How to choose the best gorilla trekking group. Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi impenetrable national park in its 4 major sectors of Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga with a total of over 18 fully habituated gorilla groups. There is also one gorilla group reserved for gorilla habituation in Rushaga sector. Gorilla trekking activities can also be done in Mgahinga gorilla national park with its one gorilla family Nyakagezi. The key question that every traveler interested in tracking gorillas wants to know is; How to choose the best gorilla trekking group.

Key to note is that these gorillas are the same in all the sectors, and so don’t not worry which group you will be assigned to track. Important to note also is that when you buy a gorilla permit, you do not buy a permit for a particular group, you buy an open permit assigned to a particular gorilla sector or location and its open to any gorilla group with in that sector. As such, you may not have a chance to select a gorilla family for yourself but rather a gorilla location. You will be assigned the group to track during the morning briefing at the UWA gorilla sector office depending on the number of tourists that have showed up. However, you need to know that there are only maximum 8 people allowed to track each gorilla family.

The difference in experiences with different groups or locations may depend on the terrain of the location, the number of gorilla group members, weather at hand, the fitness of the trekkers, the movement of the gorilla families among other factors. If you have a particular group of interest, you can forward your request in advance to your tour operator who will engage management of the park and you will be allowed to track your group. if you are travelling on your own, you can make a request to UWA management in advance to accommodate your interest. However, in general, groups are assigned on the day of tracking.

How to choose the best gorilla trekking group

Fitness

Hiking is a rigorous activity that involves a lot of movement in the impenetrable forests whose landscape is sometimes ragged and will involve a lot of falling, slowing down movement, and several breaks to ensure every tourist in the group is at the same level. The park management normally equips you with walking sticks to support you during tracking. There are also community porter available at a small cost to help you carry your bag while you concentrate on the trekking. Generally, some sectors take a lot of time and require a lot of fitness and in this case Nkuringo sector and some groups in Rushaga sector. Ruhija and Buhoma are relative, and on a general perspective, they are not hard to track compared to the southern sector. Nkuringo sector would be better for the adventurous youths but not for elderly and weak. It is important to practice jogging a few months to your travel date to get your body used to the energies required to track the Gorillas.

Time at your disposal

The time at your disposal especially after tracking may dictate on the group to be assigned to or even the location. If you are going after tracking, and want to catch a flight or connect to the next destination, choosing a sector that easily connects to your next destination would be ideal. You can also request a group that is nearer so that after tracking, you can connect to your next destination. There are always advance trackers on daily that communicate with management on the location of each gorilla group, and so by the time clients set off for tracking, most of the groups’ estimated location is known.

Interests

Your interests on how you want your gorilla experience to be and the key interests in the individual member groups will determine your interested group and sector. Each gorilla group has different unique members in terms of numbers, age among others. Some groups have bigger members compared to others. Others have a composition of different age groups ranging from lead silverback, black backs, females, mothers and juveniles. Depending on your interests in group composition, you can request for the group or location that suits your interests. Some sectors give beautiful scenery compared to others for instance the southern sector of Rushaga and Nkuringo will give you spectacular views of the Virunga massif.

Special groups of people

Adventurous and energetic youth can track fairly hard groups and some special categories of people like the elderly, lame, non-fit tourists may be considered while assigning gorilla groups. Such groups should always ensure that they buy permits from the sectors that are generally not hard to track. However, situations can change on the day of tracking given the movement of gorilla group and the sector that is considered easy to track turns out hard. This is given on the general perspective. It is important to note that you will need to tell your safari guide to book for you a gorilla group/sector that favors your taste.

How & Where to book the Gorilla permit

Gorilla permits are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority, a government agency responsible for conserving all the national parks in Uganda. You can book directly with UWA Reservations Office or through your trusted tour operator to ease the procedure for you. You are advised to book for permits at least 6 months in advance especially for peak season, and at least 2 months in advance for low season. However, last minute booking is possible but not guaranteed.

Best time to Visit the Gorillas

Gorillas can be visited any time of the year due to the conducive weather all year around. Trekking can take place even during the rain and that’s why you are encouraged to carry rain jackets. Gorilla trekking is done daily from January to December. However, some seasons are more competitive than others especially peak season where booking early in advance is advisable. Peak season include June to September, and December to February. Low seasons include March to May, and October to November. The low season is also a good period for the tourists that would not prefer to meet a lot of in these protected areas. With all the information on how to choose the best gorilla trekking group, lets get going. Embark on an adventure of a life time in the African wilderness.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

gorilla safaris

Gorilla Tours

Travel Blog

Uganda Attractions

Uganda Safaris

Uganda Travel Packages

Mgahinga Gorilla National park is the smallest national park amongst all the 12 national parks existing in Uganda. Mgahinga is one of the forested parks covering a total surface area of 33. 7km2. It takes its name from Gahinga which means piles of Volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the foot hills of the volcanoes a local name being using by the surrounding community; the Bafumbira. Mgahinga Gorilla national park started as a game sanctuary declared by the British administration which was later gazatted into a national park in 1991. The park is found in the southwestern Uganda approximately 510km from Kampala through Kabale and Kisoro road.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits, at an altitude between 2,227m and 4,127m above the sea level. The park lies within the Virunga transboundary bordering 2 other national parks; that is Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga National park in DRC both of which also host the endangered mountain gorillas. The government of Uganda gazatted it to protect the few endangered mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Uganda hosts more than half of the worlds endangered mountain gorillas found in Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga Gorilla national park. The park also harbors the spacious endangered golden monkeys that inhabit the bamboo with in the park. The park has 1 transboundary habituated gorilla group called Nyakagezi which supports gorilla tracking activity with in the park

The original occupants of this forest before it was gazatted in 1991 were the Batwa tribe(pygmies) who were relocated by the government of Uganda to the neighboring community for resettlement, and thus they still attach a lot of cultural significancy to this park. They used to survive entirely on the forest for all the necessities including food, clothing, shelter, medicine, fighting weapons, making fire, getting water among others all extracted from the forest itself. The surrounding community now practices agriculture along the lower slopes because of the rich volcanic soils that support crop farming

It was also gazatted to protect and conserve the beautiful scenery formed by the 3 striking extinct volcanoes which lie along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. They include Sabinyo measuring about 3669m, followed by Gahinga 3474m, and Muhavura being the highest at 4127m. Their slopes contain various mountaine vegetation with various ecosystems giving it an astonishing beautiful scenery. This acts as water catchment areas to the surrounding communities.

Access to Mgahinga Gorilla national Park;

By road from Kampala through Kampala-Mbarara-Kabale -Kisoro road

By air from Entebbe/Kajassi to Kisoro air strip.

By road from Kigali through Katuna /Kyanika border.

Tourism activities in Mgahinga gorilla national park include;

Gorilla trekking;

Mgahinga Gorilla national park has 1 habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi which is tracked on daily basis. It’s a transboundary group, which used to migrate to Rwanda back to Uganda but important to note is that since 2012, it’s been stable in Uganda. The gorilla tracking starts at Ntebeko visitor information center with briefing from UWA ranger Guides on the do’s and don’ts regarding gorilla trekking and what to expect. Nyakagezi group has 9 members in the family and on a lucky day, you will be able to sight all of them. This activity takes 3 to 6 hours dependent on the movement of the gorilla family on the tracking day. Once you meet the gorillas, you will spend 1 hour observing them and taking photos in close range. Thereafter, the guides will lead you back to the point where you started for debriefing and award of certificates. This is one of the unique activities you should never miss to do. It comes once in a life time.

Volcanoes climbing; Mgahinga gorilla national park has three volcanic mountains that is Muhabura being the highest, followed by Gahinga and then Sabinyo. These are extinct volcanic mountains that are found in the Virunga transboundary in the border of 3 countries including Rwanda, DRC and Uganda. The volcanic mountains harbor montane vegetation that gives it a very beautiful scenery loved by all the mountain climbers. This hiking activity takes an entire day starting very early in the morning from Ntebeko. All the 3 volcanoes can be hiked in one day or depending on the fitness of visitors, they will decide if to climb all or chose either one or two of them. Hiking Sabinyo may take you close to 6 hours following a steep ridge up to the peak. Sabinyo peak stands in the boundary of three countries, Rwanda, DRC and Uganda. Standing at its peak gives you an opportunity to be in 3 countries at the same time. Gahinga has a swamp filled crater and giant robelia, and may take you close to 8 hours. Once at the peak of Muhavura being the highest, hikers on clear day are rewarded with the views of the Virunga volcanoes, lake Edward, Bwindi impenetrable and the peaks of Mt Rwenzori.

Golden Monkey tracking; Mgahinga-Gorilla National Park also hosts the endangered golden monkeys found in the bamboo forest within the park. Just like gorilla tracking, it starts with the briefing by the UWA ranger guides at Ntebeko visitor information office explaining the do’s and don’ts about golden monkey tracking. This activity takes about 2-5 hours depending on the movement of these primates on that particular day. Just like gorillas, you will also spend 1 hour with them taking photos in close range in their natural habitat. This activity can only be done in the Virunga’s in the whole of East African region. It should not thus not be missed on a vacation.

Batwa Cultural Experience:

The Batwa were the original occupants of the forest before it was degazetted into the national park. The forest was their survival in terms of getting food, water, clothing, shelter, hunting and defense weapons, medicine among others. This was their ancestral home. Later, they were moved out of the park and settled in the neighborhood communities surrounding the national park to receive civilization and leave the forest for conservation. Therefore, this activity is done in liaison with the Batwa living in the community to support their livelihood. They will guide you through the forest with enriching stories on how they used to stay and survive on the forest for their livelihood. This will give you an enriching cultural experience that will last a life time. This activity ends with getting to Ngaramba Cave which is one of the largest caves in the virungas that used to act as a palace and parliament for their Kingdom. The Batwa dancing group will welcome you with lots of entertainment with in the cave and outside the cave before being led to the finishing point.

Accommodation in Mgahinga National park:

Mount Gahinga lodge

Gorilla nest

Amakoro Songa hotel

Virunga hotel and camp site

Lake Murehe resort

Lake Mutanda resort

Other hotels in Kisoro town.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

nikita

Africa Adventure safaris

gorilla safaris

Gorilla Tours

Travel Blog

Uganda Attractions

Uganda Safaris

Uganda Travel Packages

Bwindi Impenetrable National park is a forested park which was gazatted in 1991 mainly to protect and conserve the world’s remaining mountain Gorillas, and was declared as a UNESCO Natural Heritage site in 1994. Its harbored by the impenetrable forest covering a total surface area of 321km2. The park is found in the south western Uganda on the edge of the Western Arm of the East African Rift valley in the districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro districts. The parks altitude is between 1160m -2607 m above the sea level. The entire vegetation covering the park is the impenetrable forest with hilly and rugged terrain making it the coldest place in Uganda with temperatures often measuring average minimum of (11 degrees C) and average maximum 24 degrees C . Bwindi impenetrable national park is a water catchment area having a source of over 5 major rivers that feed into lake Edward, and also serving water to the surrounding for home consumption.

Bwindi impenetrable national park has one of the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests and contains over 400 species of plants some of which are over 300 years old. More importantly, this impenetrable forest hosts over 500 mountain gorillas representing more than a half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Some of which are habituated and are tracked on a daily basis, while others are still under habituation and others not habituated. It also harbors other mammals like elephants and antelopes with estimated numbers to be over 120 including several other primate species such as velvet baboons, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and chimpanzees among others. Bwindi impenetrable national park is also a good birding destination with over 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

The national park has 4 major sectors or locations where gorilla trekking takes place. This is a major activity that attracts most of the tourists to come to Uganda. It’s a must see in Uganda and we guarantee 100% of meeting these endangered gorillas while on the tracking. The four major sectors include: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. In total, there are 17 groups in different parks that are tracked on daily basis which include:Kahungye, Mishaya, Nshongi, Busingye, Bweza, Bikingi, Bushaho, and Rwiji,Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguriro, and Mukiza,Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, and Katwe,Nkuringo and Christmas

Tourism Activities in Bwindi impenetrable National park include;

Gorilla trekking; Bwindi Gorilla national park has a total of 17 habituated gorilla groups found in the four major sectors of Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Buhoma. These gorillas are tracked on daily basis with regulated numbers of 8 as maximum per group. This activity is led by UWA rangers and guides, and starts from any of the tracking location with the briefing at the visitor information centers at 8:00 AM. Gorilla trekking takes 3 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorilla family on the tracking day or even where they slept the previous night. You will be allowed to spend only 1 hour with them after meeting them and taking photos in close range. Thereafter, the guides will lead you back to the point where you started for debriefing and award of certificates. This is one of the most rewarding experiences that give you lasting good memories. It’s a MUST do activity on a vacation in Uganda

Gorilla Habituation Experience: Gorilla habituation takes place only in Rushaga sector with the group that is still under Research that has not yet been declared for tracking. This implies that the research group is not yet used to people in comparison with the tracking groups, and as such, there are lots of movements involved in trying to follow them during the activity. Its a very regulated activity in terms of numbers allowed on daily basis which is only 4 people. This experience allows you to stay with the gorillas for only 4 hours studying their behaviors and their ways of living including de-nesting, mating, feeding, nesting among others. The 4 hours start right from nesting (where they slept the previous night). You will be led by UWA Ranger guides and Researchers, and on request you can be availed Gorilla Doctors. After the experience, you will be led back to the information Centre for de-briefing and award of certificates.

Nature walk/Walking safaris; There are nature walk trails in all the trekking sectors to facilitate those who wish to explore the “impenetrable forest” on foot, including waterfall walks, forest walks, primate encounters, mountain views and impressive birdlife. These nature walks last between 3 to 4 hours and can be led either by community guides or UWA ranger guides. You can also take along walking safari from Buhoma to Nkuringo, or from Nkuringo to Buhoma which takes about 5 hours.

Batwa Cultural experience in Rushaga; The Batwa known as pygmies were the original occupants of the forest before it was degazetted into the national park. They used to survive on the forest entirely for water, food, medicine, shelter, fire making, clothing among others. Later, they were moved out of the park and re-settled in the neighboring communities surrounding the national park. They live on the foothill and practice agriculture for domestic consumption. This activity supports them for their livelihoods. The Batwa guides together with the UWA Ranger guides will guide you through the forest with enriching stories on how they used to stay and survive on the forest for their livelihood. They will make a lot of demonstrations on fire making, how they used to fetch water using bamboos, making clothing out of the forest materials, doing visits, conducting marriage and burials, entertainment among others. This will give you an enriching cultural experience that will last a life time. This activity ends with lots of entertainment from Batwa dancing groups.

Canoeing; This is a community-based activity done around the lakes on the foothills of the mountain slopes. Community guides will take you on a canoe experience on either lake Mutanda or lake Mulehe. These are lava dammed lakes formed by volcanicity, and as such they do not attract any fishing activity because of their depth due to their formation. Both lakes are found in Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors

Accessing Bwindi;

It can be accessed by road from Queen Elizabeth National Park to the north (2-3 hours), from Kabale to the south (1-2 hours), or from Kampala via Mbarara (6-8 hours).4WD is the most recommended vehicle since Bwindi is surrounded by hills with rugged terrain due to rains.

There are also daily buses going from Kampala to Kisoro, for those who wish to track in Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga.
