4 Days Nyiragongo & Virunga Gorilla Tour Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Virunga after Kigali city tour
Meet your professional guide who will warmly welcome you and later briefs you about your 4 days Nyiragongo & Virunga safari. You will then embark on Kigali city tour with expectations to explore the former presidential palace (this was used by Habyarimana before he died due to plane crush), Gisozi genocide centre (get to learn more about the 1994 Rwandan genocide and how the country has tremendous transformed), craft markets. After, lunch will be provided then you set off to DR Congo border while enjoying great sights of magical Rwanda’s countryside. Clear at the border and transfer to your lodge for relaxation and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking & go relax at Senkwekwe Centre
Following a leisurely breakfast, carry your bottled water and some snacks then transfer to briefing point in Virunga National Park. This is for you to have understanding on gorilla trekking guidelines and to be allocated to one of the 8 habituated gorilla families in Virunga.
Your gorilla trek in Virunga National Park will involve trekking through the dense vegetation, steep slopes before you come across mountain gorillas. It is an adventure taking between 2 and 6 hours then once you find these creatures, you will have a maximum of 1 hour with them exploring more about their daily behaviors and also to take photos. Thereafter, you will get back to your lodge to chill but interestingly, Virunga being a beautiful park, expect to enjoy its stunning scenery, spot out some birds, mammals, and other primates.
You will have a relaxed afternoon and later, visit Senkwekwe Centre (the only orphanage sheltering mountain gorillas about 5 orphans). This centre lies near Mikeno Lodge.
Day 3: Mt. Nyiragongo climbing
Have a tasty breakfast and later, connect to Kibati for briefing before you start climbing to the top of Nyiragongo Volcano. Climbing Mt. Nyiragongo can cover 4-6 hours although this may depend on your general physical wellness. At the top of the volcano, you will have excellent views of other volcanoes, Goma town, Lake Kivu, Rwenzori Mountains, Kahuzi-Biega National Park. At night, expect breathtaking view of the boiling lava lake as it glows.
Day 4: Get back to Kibati-drive to Kigali
Have a delicious breakfast and later, commence descending to Kibati ranger post. This will begin at 8:00am and you get back while enjoying view of other landmarks and the Virunga National Park. This will mark the end of your 4 Days Nyiragongo & Virunga Gorilla Tour.
