2 Days Nyiragongo Hiking Tour itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Mt. Nyiragongo to start ascending
After breakfast, meet your driver-guide for pick up early in the morning at a hotel in Gisenyi/Goma. You will then be transferred to the Goma border from where you will connect to the Kibati ranger post for a briefing regarding a hike to Nyiragongo Volcano. At Kibati, you will be assigned to an armed park guide and accompanied by porters to help visitors with heavy luggage.
By 10:00 am, you will start climbing to the summit of Nyiragongo that may last for about 4-6 hours but this may depend on travelers’ physical fitness and the nature of the terrain. Note, the hike to the top of Mt. Nyiragongo is divided into 4 sections with the first 3 being easier and the last one that gets tougher as you move towards the summit of this volcano. You will enjoy clear views of the boiling magma as it glows magnificently at night, take as many pictures as possible.
Day 2: Descending from Mt. Nyiragongo to Kibati post & return to Gisenyi, Goma or Kigali
On the second day of 2 days Nyiragongo, you will have a cup of tea or coffee at summit camps. After, you will have an easier journey descending to Kibati Ranger Post taking you about 2-3 hours. As you descend, there is a higher chance of viewing Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Virunga National Park, Virunga volcanoes, Lake Kivu, and many more. Once at the base of Mt. Nyiragongo, you will be transferred to Gisenyi/Kigali with en-route lunch. In Kigali, you may have a city tour with an opportunity to visit the Kigali genocide center, craft market, and other historical sites.
