The mountain has its summit in Rwanda, yet the legs stretch to the democratic republic of Congo, which shares the Virunga Mountains.
It is said that the name Bisoke was derived from a local Swahili word; Bisoke, translated as water- a reference to the two beautiful crater lakes at the mountain summit; One is in the heart of the summit, at 400 meters wide and 100mtrs deep, whereas the other a few meters to the peak. This mountain summit stands at 3711 above sea level; the fourth highest of the mountains in the areas and the other mountains you will see surrounding it are; Mountain Karisimbi at 4,507 meters, Mount Sabyinyo at 36711, Mount Nyamurangira at 3,058, Mount Gahinga at 3470, Mount Mikeno at 4437, Mount Muhabura at 4127 and Mount Nyirangongo at 3470.
Mountain Bisoke was formed by a rift action at the edge of the great East African rift. Though dormant, history has not written off the two times the mountain has erupted; 1891 and 1957. Recently, the eruption that occurred led to the formation of two small volcanoes at the northern edge, and two crater lakes.
The mountain is decorated by lush Alpine vegetation originating from the Hagenia forest. The vegetation offers foliage and asylum to several animals and birds in the park; notably; over 30 rare bird species, the rare yet endangered mountain Gorillas, golden monkeys, elephants, and buffaloes among others.
