Baker’s Lodge on the Nile’s south bank provides elegant but traditional African lodging as well as direct river access. The lodge, named for the English adventurer Samuel Baker, has excellent cuisine, drink, housing, and facilities. Paraa Safari Lodge

Paraa safari lodge is one of the top Luxury Accommodation in Murchison Falls National Park. The Paraa Safari Lodge is located on the Nile’s north bank. The hotel is designed to fit in with the stunning natural surrounds. The lodge was built using natural materials and talented local craftsmen. A UV filtering system is used to purify water from the Nile to drinkable levels. The solar-powered private fridges make the resort perfect for ecologically concerned tourists. Chobe Safari Lodge

Chobe Safari Lodge, located on the Nile’s north bank, is designed to give breathtaking views of the mystical river. About Murchison Falls National Park.

Murchison Falls National Park was gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 and upgraded into a national park in 1952. Game Drives

The game drives in Murchison Falls National Park are one of the attractions of visiting the park because guests get to see a variety of wildlife species. The majority of the game drives are conducted in 4×4 safari vehicles. Because of the significant concentration of wild animals on the Northern bank of Murchison Falls National Park, game drives are usually conducted there. The Park’s northern region is distinguished by short savannah woods and open savannah grasslands, which provide a perfect habitat for a variety of wild species.

Boat Cruise

The boat cruise in Murchison Falls has always proven to be the most exciting of the park’s activities, and it is significantly different from other boat cruises in other countries such as Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, or Congo. Birding

Murchison Falls National Park is home to about 450 bird species, some of which are exclusively found in the Albertine area, while others are rare and endangered. Other birds are common east African birds that may be found in all Ugandan protected areas. Murchison Falls National Park is home to the shoebill stork, a critically endangered ancient bird. The shoebill stork may be seen on a downriver boat tour in the Albert Delta, which is where the River Nile meets Lake Albert.

Ishasha Jungle Lodge is located 2 kilometers from Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Katokye Gate, along the River Ntungwe. This is an ideal location for photographic safaris in the Ishasha sector, as well as a stopover on your way to Bwindi National Park. The Bush Lodge:

Bush Lodge is a Midrange Accommodation in Queen Elizabeth National Park and offers visitors on safari mid-range accommodation facilities. It is located in an environmentally sensitive area and is made up of bandas that give the impression of being in the wilderness. This lodge also offers views of various wildlife species, the Kazinga channel, and the rolling savannah. They have non self-contained and self-contained tents as well as bandas. Park View Safari Lodge: It is located on the outskirts of Queen Elizabeth National Park, about a 10-minute drive from the park’s main entrance. Gorilla Trekking

Murchison Falls National Park: 

Murchison Falls National Park is the largest conservation area in Uganda, located in Northwestern Uganda (Masindi District). The park, which spans over 3,800 square kilometers, is named after one of its most popular attractions, the Murchison Falls. The Murchison Falls are formed when the Nile River flows through a narrow gorge before plunging 42 meters in a mighty roar. The park is not what it used to be due to past insecurity in the country and unrestricted poaching. However, the park has recovered as a result of more recent conservation efforts.

The park is home to the largest population of the now-endangered Rothschild Giraffes in East Africa, with over 1.550 animals. Queen Elizabeth National Park:

Kidepo valley national park

Lake Mburo national park.

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s smallest but most accessible national park from Kampala. Lake Mburo is the largest of the park’s 12 water bodies. Zebras can be found in Uganda’s Lake Mburo National Park. With over 300 species congregating at the lake and its swampy shores, the park is a birder’s paradise. The absence of elephants in the park benefits the vast woodland. Antelopes, buffaloes, leopards, jackals, and hyenas abound in the park’s Savannah grass. The dry season is the best time to see animals on safari because they congregate at Lake Mburo to drink water.

The Rwenzori Mountains:

Uganda has many mountains, but the Rwenzori Mountains stand out. Tourists enjoy hiking to the top of the snow-capped Margherita peak, which is located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mount Elgon national park:

In many Ugandan parks, rhinos have been poached for their valuable horns. The sanctuary protects rhinos from poachers and human interference, allowing them to reproduce in a safe environment. The park has over 60 rangers and guards, and visitors can interact with conservationists to learn more about the project and Rhinos. Lake Bunyonyi:

Lake Bunyonyi, with its 29 islands, is widely regarded as Uganda’s most beautiful lake. The lake is close to the Rwandan border and the towns of Kabale and Kisoro. Although the lake is one of the deepest in Africa, it is the sheer scenic beauty that distinguishes it and draws both international and local visitors. It provides great intimate spots to relax and watch the day go by while planning your next activity. One can also go watch the Batwa Pygmies’ traditional dances or hop from one island to another by boat, spotting the various island villages, schools, and settlements. The lake is close to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and visitors like to stop by on their way to see mountain gorillas.

Source of the Nile:

A safari in Uganda should include a two-day visit to the Nile’s source in Jinja, which includes whitewater rafting. The Nile River is one of the world’s three longest lakes, passing through several countries after leaving Uganda, including Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt. Uganda Wildlife Education Centre:

The Uganda government established the center in Entebbe for the purpose of education and wildlife conservation. The center was recently renovated and has expanded significantly in recent years. The number and variety of animals, birds, and reptiles has grown. Those visiting Uganda for short workshops and conferences will find the Entebbe Zoo to be an excellent place to sample the country’s flora and fauna.

Sipi Falls:

The Sipi Falls are some of Uganda’s most beautiful waterfalls. The Sipi Falls, located at the foot of Mount Elgon, are one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions. There are three levels, with the highest level attracting the most visitors.

Mountain gorillas, like many other wild animals, are inherently afraid of humans and will flee or become hostile if confronted. Gorilla charging is uncommon, although it might happen if the group is approached without a habituation period. Mountain gorilla habituation is the process of acclimating these kind and charming creatures to humans and teaching them to regard humans as any other harmless thing in their habitat. The habituation process for gorillas normally takes two to three years, but it can go up to five years. During the habituation stage, gorilla group members are also named.

A group of trackers, guides, and researchers approach a gorilla troop in a non-threatening manner with the goal of determining the best way to communicate with the gorillas. This is perilous because gorillas, particularly the dominant silverback, would want to assert their dominance, and some level of aggression should be expected. The key to gorilla habituation is to get the approval of the dominant male. Once this is accomplished, closeness to the group can follow. After the gorilla group has finished the habituation procedure, they are examined before being opened to tourists.

Gorilla Habituation process.

The gorilla habituation process began in central Africa in the 1960s, spearheaded by Dr Dian Fossey along with tracking, identification, range mapping, and other research activities that are still being implemented by gorilla conservation authorities today. Gorilla habituation is a useful tool for gorilla conservation projects and research because it enables for easy monitoring of gorilla groups’ security, health, population trends, social behavior, and feeding patterns. It is also possible to quantify the revenue earned by local communities, governments, and businesses, particularly tourism-related businesses, using gorilla habituation. Gorilla habituation is risky and time consuming. As a result of regular contact with humans, it exposes gorillas to hazards such as sickness. Furthermore, for habituation to be considered successful, a significant amount of time must be set aside.

Gorilla habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable forest.

Mountain gorilla conservation and habituation began in the early 1990s with the establishment of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in 1991. This involved three gorilla groups; the Katendegyere and Mubare groups in the Buhoma sector and the Kyagulilo Group in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi in the initial phase of habituation. In 1993, the first two groups were available to tourism activity. However, the Katendegyere group, which had 11 members (down from 3 in 1998), crossed to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Sarambwe Game Reserve, while the Mubare Group, which was led by Ruhondeza (a Silverback gorilla who died in 2012), now has 12 members following a series of adjustments. The Kyaguliro, a group that was the target of a poaching incident and lost four members, now has 18 members due to fresh births.

As gorilla trekking became more popular in the mid-1990s, so did the need for new Gorilla families to be habituated because the original group just couldn’t meet all of the requests. This resulted in the formation of two additional groups, the Habinyanja and Nkuringo. However, the Nkuringo group was only opened to tourism in 2004 because to a number of problems, including inadequate infrastructure.

With the need to disseminate its significance to the majority of Bwindi, the third phase of habituation began in 2006, with two additional groups habituated and opened up for tourism in 2008. The Nshongi and Bitukura tribes were among them. The Nshongi group in the park’s southern sector was the largest gorilla group ever recorded, with over 30 members at the time. This was the outcome of a major split in the group, which resulted in its merger with another group. In 2008, two more groups were habituated: the Kahungye Group in the Park’s southern half and the Oruzogo Group in the forest’s western section, which had 30 and 20 members, respectively.

The former splintered into nine members to form the Busingye Group.

Trekking vs. Habituation Experience with Gorillas

Gorilla habituation experience is a newly developed activity for mountain gorilla enthusiasts in which four tourists are given the opportunity to experience the joy of the Gorilla habituation process for four hours under the supervision of studied and qualified trackers. This is in contrast to gorilla trekking, in which 8 people are assigned to each gorilla group and can only observe the gorillas for one hour. The Uganda Wildlife Authority pioneered gorilla habituation experience in 2014, which is exclusively available in Uganda.

You will have more time to learn about their way of life, take more photos, observe them interact, feed, build nests, and groom themselves during the gorilla habituation process. You will also learn about the roles that each member of the family plays. The gorilla habituation experience, which includes park entry, costs $1500 compared to the $700 spent for one hour of gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is less expensive than the habituation experience. The Uganda Wildlife Authority designated two gorilla populations in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi for habituation in 2018-2019.

The Bikyinji family, which has 22 members, is located in the Rushaga sector of the park, as is the Bushaho family. The Bushaho family split from the Nkuringo family to form a new one. This group is commanded by a dominating silverback named Bahati (after the location where the group was originally spotted), who commands three adult females, an infant, a juvenile, a subadult, and a black back.

What happens during the Bwindi gorilla habituation experience?

Visitors scheduled for gorilla habituation experience/process meet at the Bwindi park headquarters in Rushaga at 7:30 a.m. for a briefing by authorities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the research team before the activity begins at 8:00 a.m. The gorilla habituation process requires a minimum of 15 years of age. It is recommended that anyone wishing to participate in the habituation process be physically fit enough to hike to the steeper and denser parts of the forests. These gorillas tend to wander to difficult-to-reach terrain and portions of the park. Sick people are not permitted to participate in the gorilla habituation procedure. Human infections such as influenza pose a concern to mountain gorillas. When photographing mountain gorillas, avoid using flash cameras. Do not try to imitate or mock gorillas. To avoid agitating them, keep at least 10 meters away.

The greatest time to see gorillas is usually during the high seasons. These go from December to March and June to October. However, you can also visit during the low season in April, May, October, or November. However, these months are unfavorable because of severe rains which make hiking difficult.

Due to the strong demand from travelers for the gorilla habituation experience and the limited amount of permits available per day, you must book early – at least 6 months before your visit is recommended. Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your travel operator. Booking tickets requires your passport information.

Long-sleeved shirts made of synthetic material that dries quickly, gardening gloves, a hut, long trousers, a rain jacket, bottles of drinking water, hiking shoes, a camera, a walking stick, and, of course, insect repellents to protect you from mosquito bites should be included on parking lists of essentials. Pack some snacks or lunch because the habituation process normally takes the entire day. It’s also a good idea to employ porters who can help you carry large things and climb steep slopes.

This is another midrange lodging option and one of Uganda’s oldest hotels. This hotel is in Kisoro Town, 14 kilometers from Mgahinga National Park. It has about 11 well-furnished rooms ranging from single, double, twin, suite, triple, and others. The hotel has a restaurant, laundry services, internet, a garden, and a lounge, among other amenities.

Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp

This camp is located about 12 kilometers from Kisoro town, near the entrance to Mgahinga National Park. It provides a panoramic view of the Virunga Mountain ranges of Sabyinyo, Muhabura, and Gahinga. There are three bandas and two dormitories at this camp. Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp is the best option for those who want to experience the best of nature at a pocket friendly prices.

Mgahinga Rest Camp

This rest camp, located near Mgahinga National Park, has 9 grass thatched bandas and 3 tents with private facilities.
