In your 5 Days Virunga Gorillas & Nyiragongo Hike to the eastern region of D.R. Congo, you will rewind and relax on the shores of the beautiful Lake Kivu, participate in adventure of trekking mountain gorillas in Congo’s Pac National des Virunga (Virunga national park) as well as hiking to summit of Nyiragongo Mountain – a notable volcano, and one of the most active among all the Virunga mountains.
Day 1: Transfer to Lake Kivu
A meet and greet at Kigali airport or from your overnight hotel, by a professional driver / guide who will brief you on everything you expect to see or do during the 5 days’ voyage in north Kivu province of D.R. Congo. The drive will head to Lake Kivu, Gisenyi (Rwanda’s largest freshwater lake) where you will venture numerous wonders and bird species. En-route stopovers will be made at various scenic sites, to view towering Virunga massif, verdant tea / coffee plantations and the Congo Nile trail. Afterwards, you will proceed to the lake shores of L. Kivu arriving in the evening in time for dinner and Overnight.
Day 2: Explore Lake Kivu and Transfer to Virunga National Park
On your 2nd day in Lake Kivu, wake up at a very relaxed time for breakfast as you are enjoying the beautiful surrounding of the place, at one point, you will get into the boat for a boat ride as the guide explains all that you will need to know about the lake. When you return, take photos, have lunch and embark on a 3-hour journey to Virunga national park where you will trek the surviving mountain Gorillas.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking and Cultural encounter
Leave your comfortable bed early morning, have breakfast and join your driver guide for a short drive to the Virunga park ranger station for the gorilla trekking. The briefing on the dos and don’ts when tracking mountain gorillas will be then given before you embark on the expedition. Thereafter, head to the jungle in search for the captivating creatures and on locating them.
You will be assigned an hour with your allocated gorilla family as you enjoy their untold history, capture all the behind the scenes moments with your camera. you will descend down from the forest, returning to the starting point, have a picnic lunch and drive back to the lodge for afternoon relaxation. In the evening, visit the neighboring villages or the nearby Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage in Mikeno sector; return to have dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Hiking Mount Nyiragongo
On the fourth day of the 5 Days Virunga Gorillas & Nyiragongo Hike, you will drive to Kibati village where we find the hiking starting point is Mount Nyiragongo; this fun-packed activity starts at 10:00hours with a briefing before proceeding to the peak of the most active volcano in Africa.
The trek approximately takes 6- 8 hours to reach the eye-catching peak where you will enjoy the views of a boiling volcanic lake, and other Virunga mountains; retire for a camp fire and accommodation in mountain huts.
Day 5: Departure to Kigali from Nyiragongo
Descend from mount Nyiragongo, have your packed lunch at the base or in Goma town, before hitting the road for a drive back to Kigali international airport for a return journey back home.
