The 4 Days Lowland Gorillas & Chimpanzee Trekking safari is a complete primate safari package taking you through chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park and Eastern Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. On this combined Rwanda-Congo safari, you will have 3 nights and 4 days of enjoying remarkable sight primates plus other wildlife species. Nyungwe is one of the 4 parks in Rwanda and lies on the southern province and Kahuzi-Biega is in DR Congo. Your primate tour begins and ends in Kigali but involves border crossing.
4 Days Lowland Gorillas & Chimpanzee Trekking Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Nyungwe, about 5-6 hours & go canopy walk
At 7:00am after you have had your breakfast in the hotel or place of residence in Kigali, meet your guide. Get briefed on what you should expect during the 4 days Kahuzi-Biega and Nyungwe trip. Later, head towards the south to explore Nyungwe Forest National Park and on 5-6 hours’ road trip, expect en-route visit to Butare museum, King’s Palace among others.
Lunch be offered en-route and get to Nyungwe Forest National Park a home to 13 species of primates. You will go for a 2:00pm canopy walk along the 200m extensive suspended bridge. On a canopy, expect exceptional view of Nyungwe’s primates, birds and scenic canopy. Retreat thereafter to have a relaxed evening at the booked lodge as you wait for chimpanzee trekking experience the next day.
Day 2: Chimpanzee trek & connect to Bukavu
Get up and enjoy your cup of tea or coffee and later, you will be part of chimpanzee trekking adventure in Nyungwe Forest National Park. This will start after briefing on etiquette for chimp tracking. Begin your trek in Nyungwe Forest to look for chimpanzees for about 2-4 hours with a chance to spot other primates such as grey cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys and birds. Get back to the lodge to have lunch after 1 hour with chimpanzees, relax a little and connect to Bukavu town about 2 hours’ drive via Ruzizi border.
Day 3: Kahuzi-Biega for Eastern Lowland gorilla trekking
Wake up for your breakfast and by 7:00am, be at Kahuzi-Biega park offices for briefing on etiquette for lowland gorilla trekking. Your gorilla trek to see lowland gorillas may take 2-4 hours and it includes a maximum of 1 hour for photography and exploring about their daily behaviors. Retreat from your exciting lowland gorilla adventure to have a relaxed afternoon and lunch in a hotel in Bukavu.
Day 4: Return from Bukavu to Kigali Rwanda
Get the best of your delicious cup of tea or coffee and after, return to Kigali about 6-7 hours’ road trip. En-route, enjoy lunch and once you get to Kigali, go visit Gisozi genocide centre, museum (former presidential palace), craft shops while on Kigali city expedition. You will be dropped at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda provided your flights are scheduled today or a hotel/at your place of residence.
