Lake Mburo national Park is one of the smallest savannah park covering a total surface area of 370km2 located along Kampala-Mbarara high way that provides a great wildlife experience with its spectacular views composed of open savannah with acacia trees, rocky hills, wetlands with papyrus and several lakes. It offers a rewarding wildlife experience with abundancy of mammal species including Zebras, Giraffes, impalas, Elands, buffaloes, Hippos, waterbuck, sitatungas, antelopes, topi, reedbuck, oribi, defassa, hyena and leopard among others. It’s a home to over 350 species of birds which provides bird lovers an opportunity for a good birding experience.
The surrounding community is composed of the cattle keepers that have continued to threaten the existence of the park through encroachment and poaching. The national park used to be bigger than its current size but most of it was given out in ranches to the neighboring communities for cattle keeping. The park is also threated through existence of invasive species in the national park although Uganda Wildlife Authority has made efforts to reduce the presence of such invasive species.
Horse Riding in Lake Mburo National Park
This is one of the most interesting activities that you must not miss out while on your visit to lake Mburo national park. It is a concession that was signed between Uganda wildlife Authority and Mihingo lodge which is located at the edge of the national park. Mihingo lodge offers higher end and midrange accommodation and clients residing there can ably experience this activity. However, non-residents can also book and enjoy this activity. You can book directly with Mihingo lodge or through your reliable tour operator.
The lodge has over seven horses that facilitate horse riding most of which were bought from Kenya. Mihingo lodge has a capacity of taking atleast 6 clients once for the horse riding activity. There is a system in place of weighing clients before they are allowed to sit on these horses in order to reduce being over loaded that has diverse negative effects on these horses that can consequently lead to death. The maximum weight is 100 kgs but not all horses carry up to this maximum number of kgs. Some of them carry below it; that is about 85 kgs. Don’t not be surprised if you are not allowed to do this experience especially if your weight does not match the required capacity these horses can carry.
You will be taken on a horse riding safari with an experienced guide which lasts about 2 to 5 hours depending on the distance the client is interested in covering and also depending on the clients’ horse riding experience. You will explore the park’s beauty with grassy ridges, rocky hills, savannah wood land among others. You will have an opportunity to encounter with the parks abundancy of mammals with the famous zebras, impalas, buffaloes, and other species of antelopes. You will also encounter other bird species during your horse riding activity.

Other than Horse Riding in Lake Mburo National Park, a boat cruise on the lake is one of the activities that lets you relax and enjoy the beauty of the African wilderness. This is also a MUST do activity while on your wildlife safari in Lake Mburo national park. It’s done on the eastern side of lake Mburo and lasts for 2 hours. This helps you see animals on the lake shores that come to drink water including schools of hippos, crocodiles and buffaloes. You will also have an opportunity to see bird species including pelicans, herons, fish eagles, the rare shoebill. Our professional guides will enrich you with stories regarding the existence of the lake and the park and how it has evolved, its threats and how it has benefited the neighboring communities. The existing boats can accommodate a minimum of 5 people ad maximum 40 people. Its starts from the jetty near Rwonyo tourism office and managed by Uganda wildlife Authority. Booking can be done through your tour operator or with UWA headquarter reservations office or lake Mburo information center.
Lake Mburo has abundancy of animal species that offer you a rewarding wildlife experience through games drives that will give you a chance to sight most of the existing wild animals. These can be done either in the morning, or in the evening with our professional guides. Night Game drives are also possible usually done from 7:30 PM to 9:00PM using sport lights. There are several game drive tracks that will offer you opportunity to discover the heart of lake Mburo. Game drives were made more appealing after translocation of giraffes from Murchison falls national park to Lake Mburo national park in 2018 by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Other animals include: Zebras, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, sitatunga antelopes, warthogs among others.
Mountain biking is operated by Rwakobo rock lodge under a concession agreement with Uganda Wildlife Authority. Mountain biking starts from Nshara gate and runs into the park and is good for clients whose fitness is not questionable. You will have a chance to do biking along lake side tracks, Kigarama and kigambira hill which provides panoramic views of lake Mburo. This lake and seven more can equally be seen from dramatic Kazuma look out which lies at the top of a rather steep truck accessed from the Ruroko track
Guided nature walks.
The UWA guide will take you on a guided nature walk along the lake shores and around Rwonyo tourism center that would help you discover the beauty of the park on foot. While on the guided walk, you may encounter others species of mammals like warthogs, giraffes, zebras, antelopes among others. You will be able to sight some birds along the way. It lasts between 3 to 4 hours.

Accessing lake mburo national park
Lake Mburo national park is accessed by road from Kampala using Kampala-Mbarara High way located in the western Uganda which is approximately 230 km from Kampala. The park is between Masaka and Mbarara with two entry gates that is Nshara gate which is 13kms from Lyantonde and Sanga gate which is 27kms from Lyantonde. Lake Mburo national park is normally included as the transit park on the safari itenaries going through the western region including Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park.
